He is using something like a /22 subnet instead of a /24 net...

To my knowledge there are no "consumer" device based dhcp servers who can do that. Windows Superscope might be an answer.... but each scope will have an unique gateway

He didnt say what exacly his network setup is, but for me it sounds like a real mess which somehow work,... but i dont think out of the box.
Agree - first it is really not the best idea to use /22 subnet. But if I use /22 I would really prefer to use my DHCP server for that :)

I am using Unifi UDM - it does support using /22 subnets, but you are right - many routers may not

Unifi is good equip and has many enterprise functions ..
Not sure how unifi is handling the gateway problem, but it will end maybe in the same.

VLANs are a better approach to handle this
