Replace camera, keep NVR recordings

I have a NVR4116HS-4KS2 with several camera's, including 1 IPC-HDW2431T-AS-S2. I want to replace that camera with a IPC-T54IR-ZE-S3.
However, I would like the keep the NVR's recordings from this camera.

I haven't tried it, but I think if I...
  • add the S3 camera to the NVR (on say channel 5)
  • delete the S2 from the NVR (which records to the NVR's channel 2)
  • reassign the S3 camera to channel 2
I would loose the S2 recordings at step 2 when I delete the S2 camera right?

Maybe I'm overlooking things, but I can't think of a way to do this or am I wrong?

The NVR records by the channel not the camera. So by assigning the new camera to the same channel the old camera was on, it would simply pick up where the old one left off.

No benefit to assigning the new cam to channel 5. Delete the old cam, plug in the new cam assigned to same channel

Old Video will eventually be over written as with all channels once the hard drive is full.

If you want to archive the old video from the current camera you’ll need to offload/download it to another device

Thanks. You're were right. In fact; I gave the new camera the same IP adress and login credentials (for convenience) and the NVR automatically picked it up and started recording again like nothing happened.

The S3 will be a nice upgrade. That part of our yard was a "dead spot" since the S2 did not pick up animals, but this S3 will.
We have cats and marters in the area and this camera is on our chicken coop; so marters visit this area but now we can actually see it they do. (without watching the entire night recordings back)

Now the S3 is redundant; I'll have to think of a use for that camera now...
