Purchased this 8 channel recorder through an auction, it is locked with user and password.
Have already tried to send a photo with qr code to get a code, get a message that they cannot read the qr code.
How can I change it or go back to factory settings? There is no reset button on the motherboard.

As most of us here know and you just found out, the Dahua and Hikvisions of the world do not cater to the "consumer" market - their target audience is professional installers, so we are considered "prosumer" and we are fortunate to get our hands on these types of cameras instead of consumer grade junk and not having to go thru professional installers to get quality gear. Now the downside is we get them at a discount and without manuals and support and thus are on our own to figure it out. We are fortunate a forum like this exists to help with that. We do not exist in their world and that is their business model and they made the business decision to not compete with the Rings and Nests and Reolinks of the world and as such to do offer these cameras at box stores for consumers to purchase directly. They cater to the professional installers...and would tell you to contact the vendor you got them from if you have questions...

Contrast that with consumer grade cameras. You can call a Night Owl or Arlo or Reolink or Lorex or Amcrest or DLink or Google Nest or Ring and speak to a representative (now whether they can help you or not is another story) and for most novice callers they provide good customer service, but they will not tell you to talk to Best Buy where you purchased it...and several of these cost the same or more as Dahua or Hikvision...

Someone here will come thru, but a specific model that is older will take some time for someone with experience with that unit to offer suggestions...

This model is bit hard to find password back if already used and forget the password, the only way is to send the board to dahua engineer to fix up it. Need do serial port update with a special tool. This connector can't buy on the market.
Other NVRs can do serial port update.
The best way is to ask that seller the password. He sent you a useless one if he also not have the PW.

Thanks, thought I had a good NVR and now it appears that I am nothing with it, I sent an email to the auction site where I bought it, hopefully they know where this comes from.
Then take a look around to see if there is an installer in the area who might want to help me.
Is it not possible to do a reset like you do with a pc bootable usb stick and boot from there and bring the nvr back to factory setting?

This is the answer I got from Dahua Benelux.
If you do not remember the password of the NVR or camera, the camera does not have a reset button, and you no longer have access to the email address entered during the initial installation, or do not remember this, and you do not remember the answers for any security questions answered, then this is indeed a major problem. In that case, the NVR or camera should be brought in through its original supplier for recovery. This will then be reset to factory settings via special tools. Unfortunately, there are costs associated with this. Forgotten or lost passwords cannot be recovered.

Find the red arrow and the red rectangle I drew on the board. It's labeled J5.
Look under on the board under the cables where we can't see for a similar place labeled " J1", but it only has 2 connection points instead of the 4.
Take a picture of that area and post.

Am back, took a closer look at the contents of my recorder and there is a 2nd motherboard on which the utp connections are and I do find a J1 there, see photo, so try to reset there? and should the cameras be connected or not, have they also been given a password with the NVR?

If it were me, I'd definitely place a jumper on those two contacts, then apply power to the NVR while a video screen is attached. Do be certain to allow several minutes for it to reset to default firmware, at least 3 to 5 minutes. After that, remove power, remove the jumper, and re-apply power.

Doesn't help, tried several times, there is there still a battery on the other motherboard, is this battery soldered to cause the problem?

I went to a dahua specialist with my recorder, he reset my recorder, I don't know how this happened, there is indeed not much to be found on the net, and those who can keep it apparently secret.

Try taking the battery out for an hour or so.
