Review-OEM 4mp AI Cam IPC-T5442TM-AS Starlight+

Thank you for posting this comparison.

The 4MP has a higher resolution, but in my eye also suffers from far worse compression/sharpening artefacts; this cancels out most of the potential benefit. On the 2MP I can easily read up to line 7, on the 4MP up to line 8, that's only a small improvement. Maybe the settings of the 4MP can be tweaked to squeeze out a better image with less artefacts?

The 4mp looks like it has quite a bit wider FOV as well which is using up some of pixels.

Don't forget this is a fixed lens as well as opposed to varifocal.

I can see this is going to be a topic of debate for a while as it seems to be splitting opinion already

The IPC-T5442TM-AS set at 30fps, H264, 8192 bitrate. Lamp post on and off.
Thanks again for your effort.

The 4MP seems to give a lot more detail and clarity in the grass and the cars in the background. However, on both camera's you are unrecognizable, even when standing still right in front of the camera. On both cameras there is a terrible ghost effect, possibly by overactive noise reduction.

On my monitors, the 3 I've looked at with the eye chart stills, the 5231ze wins.

After several 8mp cams, and 4mp cams put up against the 5231 series, I maintain the mantra, don't chase megapixels, unless you have adequate light.
On a totally different note @looney must play a fair amount of golf, just look at those dawgs! White as the days are long LOL.
Been something like 50 yrs since I was on a golf course, other than mini golf. ;)

Ok with your tanned legs and white feet you’ve got the look of an avid golfer!

Obviously, this cam does not have optical zoom. You must not review recordings to see special interests. You also cannot digital zoom a pic. Never mind......
Sure you can zoom a picture with the proper viewing software or with chrome just clicking on the pictures in the post.
No, I don't see any great advantage with digital zoom on the 4mp vs the 2mp.

Theoretically speaking you'd be able to digitally zoom the 4MP to 200% and have the same resolution as a 2MP at 100%. Theoretically. In practice it doesn't work out quite that way.

Digital zoom for these professional cams is useless, most important the camera has optical zoom. ;)

What's the consensus on these cameras?
I ordered one from Andy last week but have not had time to play with it.
You guys like the IPC-T5442TM-AS or sticking with IPC-HDW5231R-ZE
If I were to buy more cameras right now I think other than 1 specific location which is very unique I would stick to the 5231.

My personal opinion is that the 5442 is a firmware or 2 say from taking the mantle of king

I do notice with the 2.8mm lens you can see more than the 5231 zoomed out.
Edit: I think I just found out that more MPs does not get a wider viewing angle, correct?
Wondering why I can see more with my 5442 than my 5231 side by side.
My 5442 is 2.8mm fixed with 5231 being motorized lens, zoomed out should be 2.7mm

2.7mm and 2.8mm nearly no difference. ;)

MP doesn't change the FoV but sensor size does.
