Evening all,

I've seen a few other threads discussing these cameras, but would like any updated opinions about purchasing one of these cameras, or perhaps another PTZ?

This camera would be located above my garage covering driveway, sidewalk, etc... it will be getting weather pretty much 24/7, such as rain, snow, wind, sun etc.. Temperatures ranging anywhere from -40f to +100f.
Lighting is pretty to very good. With a little adjustment I'm able to get license plate captures in color, though not quite as good as I want.

I'm leaning towards a camera with firmware that can be updated, but not 100% sold on that point. I know the 49425 can't be updated, which isn't a deal breaker.

There is a new mini-ptz coming out that I'm looking towards putting on my front porch/side yard. Seems to have the same sensor as the 49425.

Distance isn't a huge factor, with sidewalk being around 50' away, etc.. this will mainly be an extra camera that I can reach out and touch if I want to take a closer look at things. Someone messing with my mailbox, what's going on down the street, etc..
Due to trees, buildings, etc.. I can't see more than about 800' in any direction.

I'm also still thinking on getting a dedicated ANPR. haha.. I KNOW I can get color if I had another camera pointed in the opposite direction of my 5241 that I'm using LPR. I could always get another 5241, but that ANPR just looks nice.

Comments, suggestions?

You haven't been following all the daily threads being posted where someone bricked a perfectly working camera because they updated simply for the sake of updating LOL.

Keep in mind, with few exceptions of the firmware's we are working with Andy on, most camera firmware updates are security patches, which if you don't give them internet access, it is not applicable to your situation.

You realize that an ANPR camera isn't magic and won't get color at night either LOL. All it does over your 5241 is it has the capability to read and log the plates in a proprietary format that you can't do much with. And many reports are they are not accurate with USA plates. But with the 5241 you can use any 3rd party plate reader from the paid Plate Recognizer or OpenALPR to the free MikeLud version in BI to read and log plates.

Yes, I've read the bricked firmware threads. It still would be nice to have the ability to upgrade a firmware if something came out. Though I doubt much would be coming out anymore for the 5a4, and the 49425 EOL.
The 5a4 does have a 1.8mm vs 2.8mm...

As for the ANPR camera, considering the other direction has better light than where my 5241 is pointed, I fully expect it capable of getting color at night. I do like the idea of having reports etc.. showing up on my Dahua NVR.

Be aware of the size difference between similar cameras. The SD5A425 is slightly larger (by a couple of inches) than the SD49425. However, side by side it does look bigger. I made the mistake of purchasing a SD6CE445XA because I liked the specs. I was going to put it on the front of the house. When I pulled it out of the box, my wife said no way. Luckily, Andy took care of me. Going back to the SD49425 since the size is smaller and will give me what I need.

Yes, that is one thing that concerns me. Even the 49425 is a bit too big if I really look at things, though the boss lady did see the 49225 in the backyard and didn't say anything about it.
Being about 10 feet high also would "shrink" it a bit.

The only thing about the mini-ptz coming out is the dome on it. The garage area gets hit by a lot of weather, so I imagine even the 49 or the 5a, I'd be out there every month (if not more) wiping the lens off.
