I wanted to place a camera on the back of my house which would watch over the double garage at the end of the 65 ft garden. My house is two storey, so the camera would be mounted 13ft high.

Will the Starlight Turret IPC-HDW5231R-Z have enough zoom for this or should I be looking at a bullet like the IPC-HFW5231E-Z5 which has more zoom / focal length?

Also does the Dahua software have a record-on-motion setting? And does it run on a Windows machine or need a Linux server? And does it have a setting to auto delete old recordings, e.g. so I'm only storing 14 days?

Many thanks!

Use IPC-HFW4231E-SE fixed lens or IPC-HFW5231E-Z5E, if budget is limited use the 4231, if can invest more, then go to the HFW5231E-Z5E, very nice

The new version of the IPC-HDW5231R-Z which is IPC-HDW5231R-ZE has 5x zoom. You may want to try to mount it on the wall rather than the soffits to get a better (lower ~ 8' high) angle for identification. Blue Iris would be the best software NVR to run on a Windows computer, it can record continuously, on motion, or both and has a lot of options to try to minimize false alerts.

Please read the cliff notes in the wiki at the top of the page.

If you are interested in ID'ing a bad guy the IPC-HDW5231R-ZE turret would id someone out to about 46', it depends on what exactly you want to see.
Unless you need the height to overcome obstacles in the field of view, 8ft is much better. You can put in an SD card in the cam, and record to it. It will hold up to a 128gb card. Then setup the motion and other events in the cam. Then you can review the video via the network using SmartPss or the cams web gui
