I have a 7 camera hikvision system, each camera is set to 1028 x 720p at 10fps

My recorder is a computer i5 2nd gen with 8GB ram nic is gigbyte

all cams go into a POE trendnet giga 8 port POE

I want to expand my system, my current poe switch is maxed I was going to use a non POE 24 port switch GB switch with a POE injector or I also have a non poe 48 port 10/100 switch with 2 GB ports on it, most reasonably priced injectors are 10/100, then I realized my cams are only 10/100 so for me to spend the extra $ the POE Giga switch may be unnecessary. Trying to make use of old hardware I have lying around.

If I use a 10/100 switch with about 15-18 cams connected with a poe injector, what would I need to do before hand to know if this can handle the traffic. Also does my NVR need to be on the GB port of the switch.

At what point would the gigbyte speed be required.

Thank You,

@nambi, if you are adding 4 cameras or less just pick up one of these 4 POE port 10/100 switch...there is no need for gigabit with 4 cams...45 bux and you are done http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-SF1008P-100Mbps-8-Port-802-3af/dp/B003CFATT2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434750113&sr=8-1&keywords=poe+switch
If you are going to have 18 cams then you certainly need gigabit...but you only need gigabit uplink...so you can use your old switch in conjunction with a midspan like this http://www.amazon.com/WS-POE-8-48v60w-passive-Ethernet-Injector-cameras/dp/B0086SQDMM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1434750239&sr=8-1&keywords=poe
Lots of cheap used midspans on ebay to...you place them AFTER the switch and they will power the cams..big mess though as you need a bunch of patch cables.

Thanks for this information, this would mean my old equipment still has value! I appreciate the explanation.
