I've read quite a few things and watched quite a few samples now and just wanted a few people with experience to just walk through my proposal and offer some feedback. I've found a lot of helpful information from reading but I can see that everyone has a different situation so whilst I didn't want to clutter up the forum with yet another thread, unfortunately I will have to be selfish and put forward my thread.
Situation:
Parents own a takeaway business and live upstairs. Recently my father was home alone and he opened the door to an impostor water/boiler checker. Long story short we were burgled and when we realised after and called the police it was too late and there was not much either parties could do. However if we had some form of CCTV at the time then either we would not have been a chosen victim or we would have had some evidence for the police to work from. My father is now rather anxious over this recent breach and I want to help setup a CCTV system to help ease him. We live on a well lit main street so night time lighting is not a major issue. We do however live near an underground tube station and opposite a pub so I know we can sometimes get some rowdy customers.
Whilst not a professional at any IT or hardware side of things, both my father and I are quite handy. He is quite good on the physical side of things wrt installation and fittings and I'm quite good on the networking side of things (or at least I can logically figure/find something out) so we should be able to set everything up ourselves.
Proposed hardware:
Storage: WD 3TB 3.5" Purple ~£90
NVR: Hikvision DS-7604NI-E1/4P ~£125
Outdoor Entrance Cam: Hikvision DS-2CD2042WD-I WDR 4mm Bullet ~£100
Indoor Counter Cam: HikVision DS-2CD2342WD-I 2.8mm Turret ~£120
Total ~£435
Proposed solution:
I've chosen to go for the 3TB WD Purple drives as compared to the 2 and 4 TB options it seems to be the best VFM. I believe a week's worth of footage will take up around 1 TB per camera from what I've read so a 3TB drive would easily accommodate a week's footage for up to 3 cameras.
Q1: Will the NVR be able to automatically wipe the footage from the first week and continue to record week on week or will it require manual intervention?
In terms of choice of NVR, I've decided to go for the DS-7604 as we will never need to have over 4 cameras and the fact that it has 4x POE ports is perfect for us.
Q2: I assume with POE I can plug the IP Cameras directly into the NVR with just the ethernet cable going into each camera?
Q3: Is there any way of connecting the NVR wirelessly to the router or do I definitely have to plug the NVR via ethernet? Reason I ask is because we would most likely want to "hide" the NVR so that if we were to have another intruder, they would not be able to find/get to the NVR so easily. Currently our router is downstairs so very easy to get to.
In terms of camera choice I've chosen the 4mm bullet to be mounted outside pointing along the shop front so it will be a side view. I think 6mm might have been a better focal length but there isn't a massive difference and the 4mm focal length seems to give enough detail without being too far zoomed out. I've read that most people prefer the turret style cameras though but it seems that it is only due to the IR capabilities which we do not have any issues with as the shop is on a main road with lots of street lamps.
I have however decided to go for the 2.8mm turret inside the shop to get a wider FOV so that we can see anyone that enters the shop. Hopefully this will deter some more "dodgy" people but obviously the drunk probably wouldn't even notice a camera in their face.
Depending on how we get on we may get one to cover the garden in the future which won't have much lighting so I will probably play around with the turret and see how that goes.
How does this setup sound? Would it be a good step into CCTV to cover our needs?
