This is the current set-up:

NVR is in the garage with six cameras connected. There is a monitor connected to the NVR out in the garage that I use to make adjustments and view footage.

The NVR is connected to my access point/wifi inside the house by a CAT5 cable.

I routinely view footage on my laptop through the wifi, and that's where the problem comes in.

PROBLEM: When viewing footage on my laptop there is often a serious lag where the action freezes . Sometimes it recovers and the action moves at high speed, and sometimes it just locks up completely. Then again, sometimes it plays just fine.

NOTE: The same footage that freezes on my laptop plays perfectly out in the garage on the monitor connected directly to the NVR.

QUESTION: Would a HDD with a faster spin or larger cache (or both) help with this?

You problem is WiFi. Not hard drive. Test do not guess plug the laptop intonthe wired network.

If you think you need a harddrive install an SSD.
