I'm trying to run a data cable to where I need a security camera. It's the last 10' that's the issue : )

Its a 'great' room addition to the house. I got in the crawl space under the room, drilled up and got a fish pole up 8' inside the wall to the upper horizontal of the wall (sorry, don't know all the right words - is that the double plate?).

I guess I need to drill into that horizontal wood to get the cable up into the space between the vaulted ceiling and roof sheathing then into the soffit.

Any advice how you do that? the soffit only NEEDS a small diameter hole for the data cable. But to be able to drill that double plate seems hard. Am I supposed to drill UP (put a drill bit at the end of the fish rod?

THe interior wall is a thick wood paneling - maybe with sheetrock I could cut a hole in sheetrock then drill up into double plate.

Any advice??

Yeah the inside of the wall is sealed at the top with the plate. Usually this is done from the attic. Do you have access up there or does the vaulted ceiling eat up all the room in the attic?

If there isn’t direct access via the attic space. You have a few options from cutting open a square hole in the interior wall to drill threw the top plate to make the final run.

Second option is you abandon that whole idea and just mount the camera to the exterior wall.

The third option which is the most time consuming effort would be to remove the soffit and eves to that section to gain access. Which really comes down to how committed you’re to complete the run.

The first option is what most professionals would do. The second option from a professional stand point cost less time and effort.

Third option is rarely seen but used by many DIY users who hate dealing with drywall repairs / cutting into their home.

When you see a professional doing this the customer has really deep pockets and multiple runs are seen to make it worth the labor cost.

Think extra lighting, speakers, microphone, IR,

My comment is that looking at the soffet you will have some problems there as well. If you can get the soffet off, a right angle drill might fit in to let you drill down, then there's the problem of finding the fish rod/tape.

Alternately, I'd consider using conduit, painted to match the house color, from the camera down and get into the crawl space under the great room.
