Anyone have one of these? I think I need to move up from my 16-150w and just wondering how much of a difference the fan noise might be. The 16 has been pretty silent and only runs on the lowest fan setting all the time.

4 20mm fans with LNA on each fan keeps switch at 49C at fan level 1.


I purchased the UniFi Switch 24 POE-250W two weeks ago, and cut out the grills and replace the TWO stock fans, with FOUR of the Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX using the Low Noise Adapter's NA-RC10 (4400 RPM, instead of the NA-RC12 (3700 RPM). The fan configuration was two for push and two for pull going from right to left from the perspective from the front of the switch.

Before the change, fan duty speed was 1 with a temperature reading of 47C

After the change I have a fan duty speed of 0 with a temperature reading of 45C

The unit is silent. I mean nada.



I purchased a hole saw the exact diameter for the stock fans on my 24 POE 250W. Drilled the holes and the noise went away by 50%.... on top of that I turned off the Poe on each port that wasn’t using it (only using 3 poe ports) Doing that the fans run at 0 and the noise from before and after i would say went down a total of 70%.


my poe switch runs at 42c and my power consumption is 9,7W


Installation Details


The exchange is simple. The hardest part is the drilling of the 8 fan holes with a 5mm drill to use the supplied screws. Connect the three-pin pin from the fan to the two-pin connector so that the black and red contact, the yellow remains unused (see pictures). I don' use (need) the noise adapter. Temperature is 41 deg and fan level is 0, POE max. 37 watts

Thanks! I've been checking out the same thread. I was hoping not to have to pop it open and void the warranty, but depending on the noise I might still do it. Are you gonna try it out first before installing the Noctua's or dive right in? Let me know as I have to wait as BH Photo won't have the 24/250 in until late Feb.
 
I ordered from B&H, so waiting just like you. I am going to bench test it first, but I am putting the Noctua fans in.

I have 3 of these switches. Was surprised how loud they were when they get warm. I have There pro gateway, 2- switches, nvr, and BI Server running in a closet That is kept at 70 degrees and i can hear them down the hall with the door closed. There reading 49C and a fan level of 70.

Any idea how much quieter the Noctua Fans are?

This gear is definitely intended to be installed in a data center or at least a data closet away from people. They're not too bad at 70 F but really noisy as the temperature increases. I had to configure a 48 port 750w version a couple of years ago in my un air conditioned house when it was 90 F inside. Even without an POE load, that sucker was LOUD. I'd love to have a single 24 port POE switch to run my entire network but my gear is in my home office, under 10' from my desk, so I went with the non-POE version. I plan on putting a POE switch for the cameras in the garage where it can make as much noise as it wants.

So I just got mine and I plugged it in and the noise wasn't so bad on it's own but as soon as I migrated the POE Cams over the fans ran on medium speed. Gonna move forward and purchase the Noctura's. Did your switch come in?
 
Yes. I ran tests with a sound meter and a thermal imaging device in preparation for a future video. With no devices connected, the Noctua fans made an audible difference.

I tested with two installed, then four installed, and finally I tried the two low-noise adapters. I wound up leaving in the NA-RC12’s on all four fans for nearly silent operation.

Once I add PoE devices, I will have to monitor the temperature, as it will increase.

I did not cut them. I only had to make the holes for the fan screws larger.
 
Did you just use a dremel for that? I have the switch taken apart and ready for the Fans to show up tomorrow or Friday and just want to make sure I'm prepared. Thanks for the input.
 
I just used a drill bit.
And it wasn’t that sharp either! The only “issue” is that since the Noctua fan screws are not wedge shaped (can’t remember the correct term), but are like pan head screws, they aren’t flush to the case, and therefore the cover isn’t perfectly aligned like stock.

I actually got one of the screws to be almost flush by using a dremel at first but it wasn't worth the time. It's rack mounted anyway and not noticeable. I love it that it's only as loud as my 16 was. I am using all 4 fans without the LNA's. These fans rock!

I installed the switch in a new Middle Atlantic WM-8-12 on-wall rack last night and connected all the devices. I am Currently Using 18 ports and (three PoE cameras pulling 7.06 W total), and the temperature is 47°C with the fan level of 70. Again, I have all four fans using the NA-RC12 LNA's. My temperature is 2°C higher than yours, and my Tivo DVR is louder in this room than the switch, so I may speed up the fans.

Thanks, it was a mess before but I took the opportunity to clean it up when I swapped out the 16 port switch. I'll be interested in the temps come summertime. The only closet the wife allowed a rack in is also the room that gets the warmest then.

I just looked a little closer at that rack photo and noticed you have some sort of custom rack mount for the unifi security gateway.

Where did you get that?
