Under Deng Xiaoping, China's economy was opened to foreign investment. The US elite saw this as an opportunity to help China become more liberal, not just with their economy but also politically. What US elite got so wrong about China was how far it would go in accepting western investment without taking on Western democratic values. Joining us on this podcast of China Unscripted is Clyde Prestowitz, the author of “The World Turned Upside Down: America, China, and the Struggle for Global Leadership”. He was also a leader of the first U.S. trade mission to China in 1982 and is a veteran U.S. trade negotiator and presidential advisor.
