I'm drinking the dahua 2mp koolaid thanks to the awesome reviews @nayr took the time to share.

Flame me if you want but I'd like to just confirm that varifocal is mainly used to zoom in on a fixed point. Any other area (corners) would be done through digital means. If I wanted to zoom in a corner I.e. top left I'd have to invest in a ptz?

Thank you

Varifocal is intended to be able to adjust your field of view at time of installation. Then left alone unless you move the cam. It is not intended to be used as a zoom on an ongoing basis.

Thank you. Is varifocal necessary for close locations, i.e front entry cameras?

No it isn't but if you don't have it you must be 100% sure about the lens or you need to move it closer psychically. If you can spare the cash go varifocal. It's way easier to get the right scene view.
