My router has a VPN, i connect to it using open VPN app on my phone when i'm away from home. If my phone is connected to a open wifi hot spot that has no encryption like mcdonalds free wifi and if i use open VPN to connect to my router at home is the connection secure and encrypted?

Yes your connection between the 2 endpoints is secure, ie, between your phone and your home network.

Now, depending on HOW your VPN server is set up, network traffic on your phone to the internet (instead of your home network) may use the local wifi hotspot gateway, or alternatively if configured your VPN server may act as the gateway.

My phone has my home IP when i check it even thought i'm somewhere else.
