I already said I regretted saying to buy just one.

But your math is wrong. Your chance of a single drive failure is increased with two drives vs just one. It’s simple math... Anyway, I’d guess the OPs questioned has been answered some where in this off tangent thread by now.

you should ask Andy if he can put in the Western Digital Purple 8TB in for you and see what price he offers (if that is even an option).
You can use a 3.5" HD so that's good.
Otherwise, you can just go get yourself a 8TB Western Digital and run with it.

1: yes most NVR’s are capable of notifying the owner of a drive failure. (Among other conditions)

2: this argument is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard in a long time! I can’t believe someone is advising AGAINST multiple drives. You need more storage? Get more drives!

3: to the OP, start with one drive, but get the biggest your NVR will support. Storage is cheap. I made the mistake of buying smaller drives in the past. It’s a waste of money when you end up setting the smaller one aside cause you had to buy a larger one. If you end up needing more storage in the future, get a second drive

@looney2ns Thanks for your reply and all of the information you post on this forum. Can you clarify what is meant by "put it on a good backups"? I will likely only be able to afford one drive fr the NVR and will probably be able to buy a micro SD card for each of the 8 cameras. Any suggestion on the size for the micro SD cards?

I think he meant a good backup UPS. AKA backup power supply or Uninterruptable Power Supply.

I really don't know much about backup UPSs but found the following three options. In addition to the NVR, I will probably connect my modem, router, and NAS to the UPS. I just don't want to overpay for something that's overkill. Any thoughts or recommendations are appreciated!

What are your thoughts on different sized drives? If I already have a 6TB, would it be ok to add an 8 or 10TB drive, or is it better to stick with another 6TB?
 
As the old saying goes, bigger is better.

The only real caution/issue is that you end up putting all your eggs in one basket. If a drive goes, you lose that data unless you want to spend a half a kilo buck to have it recovered. I'd spread the most critical cameras between the two as a hedge against failures.

I have three 10TB drives and spread the 18 cams over them. Cams that are covering the same area go to different drives. Like I have three at the front door and each go to a different drive. Same goes for the three at the driveway. That way if one drive dies, I still have the footage from the other cams (and the SD cards).

in terms of WD Purple,, i have personally just always used them for survellience, however there are many other brands that claim/perform the same way, in that sense of spinning and read/writing consistently and from multiple handles. they are designed to run 24/7

in terms of life expectancy, i have never found out yet.. i have always just upgraded before i hit that point.. however with this most recent upgrade to 72TB(raid 50), 16TB)raid 5), 32TB((raid...5,6,,, 10,,, i forget which that one is in..)) i will keep notes on life length.

Late to the party on this but as an IT Guy that has bought tons of the CyberPower UPS units from Costco, they work great. 1350VA vs 1500VA is pointless, they are essentially the same. They both use the same dual 12V/7Ah or 8Ah batteries and those are user changeable in around 3 yrs. I prefer a UPS with AVR and the Costco unit has AVR. My local Costco has had the 1350VA unit with AVR for $99 for years. It's great. I have one of these on several things around the house/office that are worth enough to justify the $100 cost and prevent electrical damage or long term wear. One will run your PC and router for around 30 - 45 min depending on load.
 
I’ve been doing it wrong since 2012

I put two drives in every one of my NVR/DVRs and those of friends I’ve helped. Over the years I’d guess 25-30 NVRs .I always use WD purple drives.

I’ve had one drive fail in that time, one of my own 2TB drives from 2014 in an old Hybrid DVR. It failed about 2 months ago.

I got an alert from the DVR and otherwise life went on. It’s now recording to one drive and I get less days of storage.

I've had both Seagate and WD drives fail but usually after many years of use, some 24/7/365 for years on end. Same thing when I was in IT. It's a crap shoot but you usually win!
