I stick in 64MB SanDisk microSD cards on all my cameras to date. However, it is highly recommended to use Western Digital Purple hard drives for surveillance purposes. While digging around for possible future 4/6/8TB WD Purple HD's, I also saw they have WD Purple microSD cards for camera's. I'm no memory card specialist. Has anyone tried the WD purple cards? Is there is significant difference between other cards and a WD purple card?

Good question. I need a SD card for AI as it only is saved on camera and not BI when captured.

I was looking at this:

I wonder if purple would have any added benefits or if they are using the purple brand to sell a regular SD card as it is more money but specs seem to be similar:

from my quickie research... there are 2 versions of this card: xxxxPOA (what is sold on amazon) and the extreme version xxxxPIB. Can't find anyone who sells the PIB version. POA version has the write cycle of the same sized card (128MB gets you 128TBW write cycles, 64MB gets you 64TBW, and so on). While the PIB version 64/128/256MB gets you 768TBW.
Both have smart ability and -25c to 80c temp ranges.

What you need are Endurance cards (the WD purple is almost certainly one of these). Endurance memory tends not be as fast but supports many more write and read functions before it wears out, compared to ordinary SD cards - it can be as many as 3 times as many writes.

Common brands used in Dashcameras and CCTV, are Transcend, Lexar and Kingston (Endurance versions).

eg: High Endurance microSDXC/SDHC

What you're looking for is endurance rating, cctv use approval and the use of MLC or SLC memory chips.

TLC memory is commonly used in most SD cards because it's cheaper but it also has a shorter lifetime.

You might be lucky if you get an RMA, depends what you said and if they check it. Most manufacturers exclude dashcam and security camera use from their warranties unless the card is one designed for endurance use. Even them, from memory, some still exclude surveillance use due to the wear and tear.

That’s why you omit the part about it being in a security camera. Just say it was in your point and shooter and they’ll warranty it no problem.

Yeah provided they don't view any of the files.

I did buy 3 x 128mb WD Purple microSD cards. One thing to note about these cards (or so say WD homepage) is that they are industrial, made for extreme endurance of survaillance cameras, a high variance of temperature for outside duties (-40c to 80c), and some sort of humidity resistant for outdoor use.
Before, I slapped in SanDisk Utra's. Never had a problem but they have not gone through a full winter here in the Sierra Mountains yet).

Hobbs is correct, it's the purples not ultras you want Natey. I have heard of people being refused a replacement under RMA for using the wrong cards in dash cameras. I did have an Extreme in a dashcamera for about 4 years before it failed, but I was lucky.
