What determines what is contained in the clip thumbnail jpeg image?

Trying to make sure that the thumbs of the motion clips that lie on the right side of the screen contain unique and relevant motion info. Trying to separate cloud, rain, snow, trees waving in wind, etc from other more important causes of the motion recording. Therefore, what recording parameters determine when the thumbnail image is created. Can I time its development so to contain the cause of the motion recording. I am wanting to look over the thumbs to pick out the important ones without having to review all.
