What exactly is ONVIF?

Looking to educate myself about ONVIF. I don't see a sticky or article here specifically on the subject. Anyone care to point me in a good direction?

Is ONVIF specifically related to Camera or NVR's?

ONVIF is most typically related to connecting cameras to recorders (NVRs, VMSes, etc.) but they also offer less widely used standards for integrating video with other systems and for access.
