What happens when a POE RJ45 gets wet...

Soooooo.... this happened today. I had some buried conduit with a junction box to join regular cat5e to exterior cat5e to be able to run bare wire up a tree to a camera. After a torrential down pour and flooding the camera on the tree went out...

My junction box wasn't properly sealed (my mistake) and got completely flooded...here is the aftermath:




After replacing the connectors I had a chance to glob the connectors with dielectric grease and fully seal everything with silicon sealant. Everything should be good now! Lesson learned:

An single unbroken run of direct burial gel filled double jacket cable would have most likely tolerated water in that conduit. I’ve often heard “it’s not if water will enter conduit, but when.”

This appears that any standard RJ45 male connector will work, is that your experience?

I cannot speak for the OP but the first time it happened to me I was testing on a tree and using a passive POE device and it cooked the pigtail, the cam did survive. The second time using active poe , it also cooked the pigtail, that also did survive.

@Q™ nailed it. An unbroken run of gel-filled double-jacket protected by conduit. Only a trencher would cause an issue.
