is there a way to calculate the optimum height for a camera

IMO, optimum camera height would depend on what your requirements are...depends on what results you require.

Q is right. The best mounting height depends on the location and job. Front door camera for facial ID? Face height or very slightly above. Driveway camera? Probably a foot or two above face height. Depends a bit on location and height of vehicles in the driveway though. PTZ? High enough to not be blocked while still having a useful shallow angle up close if needed. High traffic public spot? High enough to not be easily tampered while balancing a useful angle on faces.

This keeps me thinking as well. So for door at face height. This makes sense, and all the type with head covering you still have something i guess.

Will have to think where to mount it than, would 2 meter high, so just above average person height still be ok ?

Ok but still location dependent as to how Ok. Cam at top of shallow landing at top of stairs? Less ok than when the approach to the cam is straight and level (no additional height due to drop and less chance of stairs forcing people to look down). Basically you're trying to improve your odds of getting them to look more or less directly into the camera from a short distance with no obstructions. Optimal placement ups those odds to near 100%. The higher the camera the worse those odds are, and they can be dramatically worse with hoods and hats if the camera is above face level.

If the cam's job is overview (what instead of who) then height can be an advantage. Doorway cam whose primary job is facial ID? Not so much...

will make some detail pictures of my situation in my new built thread. Have a front door under carport and direct next to it 90 agree angled the garage door. There seems to be a full brick wide stone in between the house door, and the garage door which faces straight to the pathway to the front door. I could basically choose any height there as it is not blocking anything (some glass next to the door, and not the door itself)

Other door is the back door, i expect more that someone tries to break that open than the front door to be honest. Also there is the heatpump outside unit, could be used to climb up the extended part of the building trying to gain access to 1st floor windows.. Will make detail of that also in my own thread.

See this thread: New Dahua install

This is view from road towards garage door.
The house door is to the left where the figure is drawn, so will walk up to the camera and than turn left to face the door.

On that piece of wall i could go from 255cmm on top all the way down if needed.
There is no sun that could reach this camera, and i can install either ir or white light there.

I put fake cams up high with a blinking LED on them then hidden facial height or less to do the actual recording
Everyone looks at the fake cams so I get a great face shot of them with the real cams
