Which CPU provides better performance for BI - the Intel i7 5820k with more cores and threads or the Intel i7 6700k with fewer but faster cores?

As Q points out the 5820 benchmarks higher, though I dont know if anyone has ever tested whether the higher clock speed of the 6700k benefits BI...the 5820 will require dedicated video which will consume more power...lets back up a bit, how many cameras and what resolutions do you intend to run?

How much money will the 6700k save over a 5-year life?

I dont know..the processors Ive tested run well below the max tdp even at 100 percent..
But a dedicated card can easily add 20-100+ per year in operating costs...even a 20 watt difference in the processors would result in about 40 per year if you pay 20c a kwh..
Its hard to calculate unless you compare the two side by side under the same load..

I currently have 7 HD cameras running @ 10 fps. The system has an older quad-core AMD at 2.4. Normal operation (no recording) averages 50-60 % CPU utilization. Get some recordings going and it pegs 90+%. I'd like to be able to use the computer for more than just BI (it was originally a general purpose system - then I got cameras and BI). So time to upgrade. If BI effectively uses the cores/threads available, then the 5820 may be better. (based on my current system with all 4 cores being pegged about evenly, I'm guessing this may be the case - but simply a guess). However, single core performance (and other things such as fenderman mentions) on the 6700 are making me pause and ask the question.

What resolution do you run the cameras at? 720p? 1080? 4mp?

most at 1080p
In that case I would recommend you buy two systems. One for home use one for blue iris. You can buy a haswell i5 hp elitedesk for 300 with most of the 3 year warranty remaining. A security VMS should be run on an independent system. Not on your home pc. This will end up costing you just about the same as buying the processors mentioned.
