I am trying to decide between two PCs to run Blue Iris and Home Assistant on. One has Windows 11 Home, the other has Windows 11 Pro. Is Home sufficient, or should I go with Pro? And why?

If you like one PC more than the other, it is a relatively inexpensive upgrade to purchase a code to update from Windows Home to Windows Pro.

That’s what I was thinking. The pc that I am leaning towards is the one with Windows Home. An upgrade from Microsoft is $99. What do you mean by purchasing a code? I see people selling codes very cheaply but I’m leery of them.

I have successfully purchased two codes through a tech web site called Neowin. At the top of the page is a link to Deals. Each time it was $29.95 and I felt it was worth the risk.

Both machines upgraded without a hitch and both have been receiving Windows updates and etc. Both just received Win 11 Pro 24H2 this past week.

It is not something you can purchase and set on. Don't buy in advance of owning the machine, the codes have an expiration date. Push the purchase button and use the code within a short time frame.

Be careful purchasing a WIN 11 Pro code on the cheep. It worked for six months and then it didn't. So I either had to purchase a proper code from MS or roll back to win 11 home.
BTW to roll back from pro to home you will need to modify some keys in the registry.

Over the years I've purchased dozens of Microsoft OEM licenses (for various MS products - not just Windows OS) from these various online retailers on the cheap. When I say cheap, I mean that Windows Pro OEM licenses normally run about $10-$20 depending on if you have a coupon code or not. I'd say the average price I've paid is $15. While I agree that you shouldn't randomly purchase from one without doing some due diligence, I will say that I have NEVER had a problem with the licenses. The relatively low cost is still higher than what MS actually charges for OEM licenses and I assume these companies are legitimate OEM partners purchasing valid licenses from MS. Now I am sure they are not suppose to turn around and resell the licenses, but they have clearly found a method that works. Long story short, I've always received valid OEM licenses that have worked "forever" - not some "cracked" license codes that get discovered and eventually blocked by MS.

Now these are OEM licenses, so you'll have to purchase a new license if you need to change hardware, but IMHO the low price more than offsets the need to purchase a new license every once in a while.

EDIT - to answer the OPs question - Windows Pro - everytime.......
