True WDR vs DWDR with the DS-2CD2342WD-I makes a big difference!

So I've been running with a DS-2CD2332-I and it was struggling with balancing the bright areas with shady areas. I purchased a DS-2CD2342WD-I to see how it would fair in this scenario. The difference is really impressive! I'd like to hear from anyone who owns the DS-2CD2342WD-I or the LTS version of this camera (CMIP3042W), which is actually what I have, what the best settings you suggest after testing etc.

Great pics. One thing to note though is that DWDR 30 isn't the same as WDR 30. IIRC 30 is too high for DWDR and too low for WDR.

I'd bump it up to 50 and see how that looks. If you get noise or blur then you've gone to far but I remember trying 80 and it was ok, whereas 80 on DWDR was a nightmare.

Well... it's dusk here now and I'm not impressed with the picture. It has problems... any ideas?

As you discovered DWDR is pretty much worthless. Also use auto scheduling to turn off WDR at night and back on in the morning. WDR at night introduces a ton of noise.

@hook3m... you're right, much better without WDR at night with IR.

I just checked on this and it just might do the trick. Of course, I now need to learn what other settings to change between day/night that will help. I just changed all three cameras to turn WDR off at 6PM and turn back on at 6:30AM.

That actually made a ridiculous increase in quality for my cameras. Need to tinker more but so far it looks great. Thanks for the advice

Is there a way to have it change settings based on the auto switch?

Having it at a preset time will only work for a short period of time as the days get longer and shorter.

Unfortunately not naively...this should be a basic function...or allow location based sunrise sunset...I have a 40 dollar honeywell wall timer that does this.
Some of posters above run blue iris and they can use this method

(asking the developer to implement wdr changes in the event scheduler is another good idea)...

Yes, this is something that makes a big difference for me as well. When you change to "Scheduled-Switch", does the IR flip on/off with that schedule as well or is it still based on light?

Another question, for those who don't mind periodically updating the Start and End times, should they be set close to sunrise/sunset or is it better to offset when it comes to WDR?

You're never going to get a great night image there. 2.8mm and close reflections. Yes you'll be able to see if someone is on your decking but no decent detail further out. No amount of WDR is going to help there, you need another camera overlooking the lawn for that and not behind pillars etc.

As for the last day image. That's as good as you are going to get realistically. Again, it's a 2.8mm camera and the WDR will help during the bright sunlight so that you don't have a completely washed out lawn.

Unless you change it in the Common Settings it will still use the light sensor to switch from day to night. As for WDR, for cameras I actively manage I adjust the WDR start and end times several times a year. For those I don't, I just set WDR to start at 7AM and turn off at 6:30PM. You're not going to get it perfect without active management unless HIK adds sunrise sunset feature or moves the WDR out of the common settings and into Day and Night.

Thanks! So for those that you do actively manage and change the WDR start/end time, have you found a sweetspot in relation to sunrise/sunset as to when it's turned on/off?
