Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

Since Dahua had chip issues and it Appears that has affected Andy's stock, has anyone substituted the dome for the turret? I paid and have not heard anything yet as far as status update, but Im thinking if the price is comparable then a dome would work for my install. It would be great to hear reviews of the dome if anybody has one.

extreme cold alone is no concern; get too hot and solder will melt and chips will fry.. too cold is not a problem, there is no moisture in the air at those temps so condensation is unlikely.. mine have all taken a few nights at lower than -20F w/out skipping a beat.. just was -10F like Wed night.. OverClockers have been driving chips down to far colder temps than any specifications would permit with Liquid Oxygen cooling and the likes.

the killer of cameras in the winter time is usually large chunks of ice or snow falling from above (off a roof/tree/etc) and impacting it on the way down..

I agree, although dahua is writing -30 degrees. Maybe the melting snow will give ice in front of the cam? In my case the cam is on a pole at 5m, so the snow must be melted, that the lens are getting free in windy conditions.

@trauts14 , it depends on your using. Outside you have more benefits of hdw than hdbw.

the camera does not generate enough heat to melt snow at negative temperatures; Ive had all my cameras white out in blizzard like conditions.. I brushed off the cams I could reach but the ones I could not reach just waited until the snow melted.

on the sides of warehouses where an entire roof full of snow/ice might fall on a camera; installers often place lil roofs/shields above em to deflect any impacts from above.

So what does chip issues mean exactly? Does anyone know what the issue is and whether its just a supply/demand type issue or is it an operational/functional issue. ??

just supply/demand issues; the sensor is new to market and it takes a while to ramp up production... early in lifecycle of chip production is when the number of rejects is highest from the supplier and that too hurts availability.. as things pickup steam it'll be less of a problem. These are great sensors and I'm sure the demand for them is very high.

ok Cool . Thats kind of what I thought. Sounds like a reasonable and "liveable" explanation to me. Hopefully they can get things going and catching up soon. I bet it is a chip high in demand right now. Just kind of anxious to get a hold of some.

this sensor been available for a while but not in very large quantities; if Dahua is ramping up a new line on them then they must be expecting that to change.

I'm really interested in adding one of these to the corner of my house to catch cars/people in an out of our neighborhood in the middle of the night. We've had a rash of mailbox tampering, car break ins, etc. lately and I'm beyond determined to catch the guy. In fact I've got him on camera with a cheap Night Owl Analog 1080p setup that I ultimately returned. I opted for better quality and went with this from Costco. Costco Wholesale So far I can't complain about the quality and from my research everything appears to be Dahua. I hope I can connect this camera to my NVR and it just be plug and play. But in connecting a new camera I'll be losing a lot of fine tuning that can be done because the NVR provided doesn't allow for shutter control and a lot of the other features. To get one of my cameras how I wanted, I had to hook it straight into my router, log in to the camera, make proper adjustments, save it then reconnect to my NVR. It's a terrible workaround but unless I'm missing something that seems to be my only option, right?

go for external PoE and put your cameras on the same network as your PC's, or plug a laptop or something into the back of the NVR so you can access that network..

but yeah if you use built in PoE your configuration options are quite limited.

The Starlights are good cameras, but while we wait for availability you can still make do with earlier models the old fashioned way: add a lot of light to the scene. It's easier if you have a fairly narrow angle of view, you can choose more focused fixtures that make a given number of watts go farther. I have a pretty night-blind cheap 1/4" sensor camera, likely worse than any Dahua you can buy, but it still does OK since I made two 6x3W IR LED fixtures all with 10 degree lenses. This lights up a car-sized patch all the way to the opposite side of the street good enough for an ID, using a 12mm lens.

I am trying to understand IVS better since the specs state that this camera supports it. If I use camera as standalone (using memory card), does IVS function works within the camera writing to the onboard memory card or it still need a IVS supported NVR for it to work?

IVS will work locally on SD card; for remote use you need a NVR that'll do something with the unique signals..

this camera has SD storage; but not all in the 2MP Starlight lineup do.. so a model w/IVS and no local storage would require a NVR to use it for more than sending an email.

How do you attach these to eves without some sort of bracket?
Do they come with a mounting plate or something?

It;s easy, if you want to see which bracket you are going to use, just search the model No. on dahua, and click acessaries, then you will know all.

Dahua just tell me the camera is online production now, tomorrow finish the testing and send some to me, i will report the exactly QTY i get. I really hope can clear all currently orders before your guys holiday!! But after Christmas, i will have enough to offer which still not buy or need more guys.

Hope someone can help me I just got my Dahau Starlight today and it doesn't seem to be powering on after being plugged into my POE switch. I have it setting in my office next to my POE switch and I've tried different ports with no luck. I have another camera plugged into the POE switch and it works fine. I've also tried a different cable but no change. Just no lights or anything from the camera to indicate it's on.

Anyone have any ideas?
