Different types of WD purple?

I just ordered my Dahua 5216 poe nvr through Andy, and I'm now looking into securing the storage device. From what I've read, the options are pretty much WD purple, Seagate Skyhawk, and I think I saw a Toshiba browsing through Newegg as well. Everyone here seems to love the WD purples. I was looking on Amazon, and I saw a few different models. One is an old model and marked as such, but there's two others that appear to be current. They vary considerably in price. What's the difference, and which do I want to get?

WD60PURZ (new & old versions)

WD6NPURX (new version only, most expensive, limited to 6GB max)

At first glance the only thing I found different between the WD60PURZ and WD6NPURX is the latter is listed under "business drives" vs "consumer drives". Same basic specs in regards to warranty, performance, caches, db, etc etc.

Not an expert though :)

For use in the 5216, which I use also, you won't see any difference. Go with the less expensive and save a few dollars. Warranty on both is the same and both are designed for sustained continual writes. I went with the cheaper drives and have had no issues for the last 6 months. I use (2) 4TB Purple drives. Note the 5216 does it's own file cleanup, once you specify in the settings how many days you want to retain saved video. It automatically overwrites older video. The 5216 will show a red light for this which for me was disturbing. Now, I just check the logs for any problems.

Thanks for the heads up. What is disturbing about it? Is it really bright?

That's not good. You're saying that is normal or no?

Oops. Made a big mistake. Lights on the front of a 5216 are all Blue, not Red. Once the hard drives in a 5216 fill, the second from the left, blue light turns on. It will stay on forever, until enough free space is freed up. Since the 5216 has the ability to overwrite older files, it's really not very informative. Kind of a useless light IMO.

PURZ is just a newer series of WD drives designed for a constant usage in surveillance systems. it will basically replace PURX after they will be sold out. PURZ is theoretically newer technology, but yet to be tested in the field. PS: WD PURX 4TB is one of the most reliable surviellance drives out there. we have deployed hundreds of those and failure rate is less than 1% for us.

Well that's good to know, cause i got one coming from newegg tomorrow lol. A 4GB PURZ, that is, not PURX. It's hard to beat $132 shipped. The 6GB was $208. I'm getting the most GBs for my $$$. If i need the space later, I'll throw down the dough on a pair of 8GB drives, but for now I'm just trying to not spend anymore. After dropping $1k on the system itself and having to plan my girl's 30th and our 2 year anniversary this month, I'm gonna be broke as a joke!

Got the NVR hooked up and my TV says "invalid format". Tried a VGA cable instead of HDMI, same thing. Tried a new TV, same (well, it says "mode not supported"...vizio vs Samsung). What gives? The instructions say to just pop in the drive and boot up for setup, implying the OS is installed on onboard storage. Is this not the case?

Checked the specs on the Samsung 1080p TV... it's 1920x1080 resolution, which is a supported HDMI output resolution for the 5216 nvr according to Dahua's website. Sent an email to Andy, because I'm at a loss here. The only thing i can think of is that it's a defective NVR.

Before going to Andy, try using the VGA port connection to a computer monitor.

A little late. I've already been in contact with him regarding the issue ha ha. His last email said that the TV needed to be 3840x2160 resolution, however Dahua's website lists the HDMI output as "up to" 3840x2160 then it goes on to list other supported resolutions (which include both of my TVs resolutions). I sent him a screenshot of the site and am waiting to hear back. He had mentioned talking with Dahua's engineers in an earlier email, so perhaps he's just acting as a middle man in the troubleshooting.

I connected the NVR to my 720p vizio via VGA cable and got the same "invalid format" message. I don't have a computer monitor that's higher resolution than that, my laptop is 720p and an old monitor I scored for free from my old job that's in storage in my basement is likely the equivalent of standard definition or 720p at best. If for some reason a 720p monitor might behave differently than a 720p TV, then I'll try hooking it up to my laptop. Is that what you're implying? It's probably better for me to just pack it all up and haul it to my girlfriend's house to connect it to her new 4k LG TV. If it don't work on that, it's got to be defective.

@Big Ry - Have you tried accessing the Web GUI built in to the NVR? This is done via TCP over your network, using the browser. Try IE first, and try connecting to 192.168.1.108 which is the default IP for the NVR. Hopefully, you know networking and are able to set up a test network using a small switch, and setting the IP manually of the computer to be in the same subnet of 192.168.1.X

You, sir, just saved me a lot of effort and frustration! I totally forgot about web access on these things. I got on easily, set the display resolution to my TV resolution, rebooted, and now i have a picture! Thank you!

Really obnoxious that these things can't detect the displays resolution and adjust automatically. It's 2017 not 1987.

Anyone had experience with the Skyhawk drives from Seagate? I have been reading some promising reviews on some independent sites, but it is always a little difficult to know how independent they really are.

After two Seagate Momentus 750GB drives that ran like crap since Day 1 (one eventually drying, taking all my files with it), Seagate has put a sour taste in my mouth. This is only limited experience though.

FYI - connected my NVR via VGA to an older LCD monitor ( not TV ) and had no issues.
