i.e., When a subject in a recording is in one place then there's a momentary gap and it appears that they've jumped to another location. I know that I've seen some threads here but can't figure out what the proper term is to search for.

check your break time settings....your make time and size/contrast settings may be too high as well causing you to miss motion

What I'm seeing now and then seems to be within the period of the recording so I don't think that it's the break. It picks up the motion events fine but say mid-way through the clip a person or whatever will be in one place and then suddenly they'll be 10 feet away. Size/contrast are at or near defaults and I think that I may have seen the same on one cam that I have recording continuously also.

Seems like I remember seeing something about a buffer setting that could be involved?

What is the correct term for that effect?

Oops... Meant to include that my break time is set at the default 30 sec.

make sure your iframe interval matches your fps...also ensure your hdd is set to never sleep...you can raise the receive buffer

15/15 for frame rate and iframe. HDD never shuts down. Receive buffer is set to 6.0 which seems to be the default. What's a reasonable number to raise the buffer with say a 2MP cam running 15 fps/4192? I don't have a good sense for what the measure of that is. Increase by 50% to 9?
