Please help me pick NVR for my cams. Here is my anticipated config.
- 6 IPC-HFW4231EM-AS.
- All connected for PoE directly to NVR via Cat6 cables.
- All camera will be outdoors
- Will connect one 4TB Purple HD to NVR
- All will have 64 GB card
- All Cams will be <= 100 feet
- I would like to store image (or few seconds video) in camera memory card AND/OR on NAS storage. I am not sure about the type of motion detection i may use. I will have to try out a few to pick one. Most probably I will pick tripwire and/or zone intrusion).
- Would like to continuous storage in NVR HD (purple) along with tags of motion detection (if possible).
- Will connect NVR to TV via HDMI
- I may connect NVR to network (for tripwire emails from couple of cameras).
- Future growth in number of cameras is not in cards right now, but I do have two slots spare.
- I do not want to overspend for future growth, I know I will keep this system and live with limitations for at least 3-4 years.
- I am not leaning towards Blue IRIS, I know that is recommended choice.

Qs. Is NVR4208-8P-4KS2 good enough or do I need to get NVR5208-8P-4KS2? I am interested only in H.264 (not H.265).

Q2. What is the main difference between 4208/5208 (apart from price)?

Q3. Do I need to get 16 channel, if yes why since I have only 6 camera.

Thanking you for answers in advance. This forum is very-very-extreamly helpful and is a treasure of information.

Take H.265.. it the same ad h264 but with less bandwidth.. also better if your home network is in the same range.. also better when you look back with mobile app...

The 5208 series says 320Mbps incoming and the 4208 series says 200Mbps. Dahua doesn't seem to provide much detail about the CPU or RAM in the different NVRs, but I'm making an assumption that this is the only real difference. They are both just listed as "quad core". But I've read a couple reviews that stated the 5000 was quicker to respond than the 4000 series when going through the various functions. For me, there just wasn't enough of a difference in price not to go with the 5216, even though I only have current plans for 6 cameras.

I bought two of the 4208 PoE series and am happy with them. Running 3 2MP cameras on each at full 30FPS and 8192 bitrate with no problems.

I can't make sense of the listings on Empiretecandy's Aliexpress site. Two 4208s with what appears to be the same description but different prices: $310 or $270. Then there's the 5208 description which states 160 mb incoming which is slower than the 4208 and I know I've seen the 320 mb figure on Dahlia's site among others.

The two 4208s are different. One has POE ports and the other doesn't. But they're priced backwards, with the cheaper one being the one with the POE ports.

I failed to notice the POE port difference. Thx

I am also putting together my first system one piece at a time as I can afford it. My first purchase was my NVR. I got the NVR5424-24P-4KS2 from Andy.
