Q: Know any Wifi-Networked Temp/Humidity sensors ?

Hi folks,

I'd like to put one or more sensors in my house that continuously monitor temperature and humidity (I require both for my application), and continuously collect data points each minute or so, storing the data on a PC that never sleeps (don't worry, not my BI PC... :-) ). I'd like to be able to monitor things in near-real time from that PC. Oddly, I haven't found a practical solution that's not woefully expensive.

I've found plenty of monitors that are USB based, where you basically leave them in a location, they record data, and periodically you plug them into a computer and the data is downloaded. I even bought one, to get me started, but it's not what I want... I want the device to be on my wifi network, and have the PC pull data from it either at intervals or continuously or on demand, without going and grabbing the device and taking it out of the region I want to monitor.

I've found a few solutions around consumer home automation that require various pricey base stations. Uggh. No, just looking for a simple network device. And found a few that require a cloud service. No thank you. And a few that sync only with mobile devices, not PCs.

Anybody know of a device that fits my needs? I can't be the only one with this need.

@master_tinkerer thanks. Looks like a wifi humidity sensor runs ~$179 for these industrial grade Monnit sensors. Wow that's a bit pricey. I was looking for something in the $50 range... I know I've seen them somewhere.

@tangent : I'm not afraid of wires, but it's impractical to run a separate wire to the PC that will be doing the monitoring. A sensor that would be wired-ethernet would be OK, since the two locations I'm monitoring either have or easily could have extensions of my hardwired LAN. I just figured WIFI is on everything these days so might as well use it, but an ethernet solution would be OK. Know any specific ones?
 
I use Samsung Smartthings. The hub cost be £50 (I'm English) and each sensor varies massively, but the reason I bought SmartThings is that it's fairly vendor agnostic, and I can use cheap Chinese sensors with it. For temp/humidity i'm pretty sure Xiaomi does one which will cost probably around £10 (I'm guessing on that part) but i'm 100% sure there will be a suitable sensor for you which is compatible with ST and cheap.

@tangent maybe so we have a complete post with options, you can link to a couple "wired" options? I am interested in something similar to @Frankenscript except since it is an empty space wired might be ok for me :D
 
imho if you can't find what you are looking for I'd consider: rasp pi + sensors / arduino + sensors

There's a huge range of options. Professional products you might find in an office building or art museum to the most basic sensor component you can interface a microcontroller with.

I'm guessing most likely you'd be interested in things more on the diy end of the spectrum, but idk. These would generally use a 1-wire bus or RS-485.
