@ my laptop
I'm new here, doing some research since I wantr to buy a security cam system.

Be sure to check the WiKi, in the blue title bar just above your first post. Lots of great information there, especially the "Cliff Notes".

Aleady read the Cliff Notes, a lot of usefull information.
Can't seem to find examples of installations with external microphones yet, Just curious how people solve this in e neat way. This since the camera's I want don't seem to exist (yet), like a Dahua full-color Starlight IP-cam with build-in mic and/or LED, preferably in eyeball/turret format or Dahua 8331 series as turret model with build in-mic.

Which use case do you have in mind to record audio together with the images? I can't believe a burglar will "shout" his name :slap:. Or recording the squeeking tyres when they take off? None of my cams do have a mic, except the front door combo (VTO/VTH) - which has for obvious reasons Audio on board :) So just out of curiosity: why?

My wife and in-laws are from a minority group. According to the police and governmental agencies it is always the minority groups who have done everything if something happened. They "invaded" our families houses multiple times already, without any valid reason, messing everything up, ruining everything, "stealing" stuff, using inappropiate language, violence and humiliating my family. When going to court afterwards, putting claims on the taken stuff, ruined furniture and physical damage done etc. it is their word against ours. So who do you think wins in court?
No, the new camera system I want is not against burglars, it is to protect my families rights from abuse by our own governmental authorities and organisations. Voice is in these cases a very, very welcome addition.
And yes, ofcourse after/during the invasion they will take the NVR as so called "evidence". They think we're too stupid to make a decent setup and take the NVR which is in sight and after that not looking for more. Therefore I will go for a redundant NVR setup, one in sight and one hidden, as well as in-camera SD-card recording and cloud storage. And not to forget UPS power backup for all camera's, NVR's and network equipment. It will cost a bit, but in this case I don't give a s**t.

And of course, having 8 to 10 cameras setup around the house will make burglars think twice before doing anything as well. :)

I fully understand your reasoning, and indeed, having "full" evidence when a gangbang lands in your house to increase identification purposes.

From my scratchbook on ipcamtalk, these items may be of interest to you:
- how to connect an external mic to a Dahua cam: Bullet Mic Review
- good VANDALproof cam (eg ipc-hdbw5231r-ze) - look for higher IK-rated devices

I like your Dual NVR setup, although bandwidth might become an issue with 10+ camera's :-) And indeed, your house might render into Fort Knox, but they will think twice!

Hope this helps!

The first item you need is a good monitored alarm system.
You also need to develop a plan of action if this happens again. Safe rooms, weapon of some sort to defend yourself. Everyone in the house hold should practice said plan until you can do it in your sleep, literally.

x2^ Practice until Your Defensive/offensive move becomes muscle not memory, like drawing Your weapon. Draw Your weapon until You don't remember drawing it. Then move to a mirror and watch and refine till you don't remember, soon Your weapon will be drawn without hesitation, and on target.

If I’m not mistaken, @M-Cube is telling us that his video system needs to protect him and his family from the bad-guy authorities and not from gangbangers. If this is correct, the advice to draw a weapon will make @M-Cube (and/or his loved ones) d e a d.

@M-Cube, the “Sacrificial NVR” is an excellent idea, but why make it functional? Instead, why not make it enticing and ultra-real. Sacrificial NVR and sacrificial cameras to lull them into a false sense of security, then capture everything with high quality hidden cameras recording to ans NVR or (a better option I thing) a VMS.

You are mistaken Qtm, I did not and would not tell M-Cube to draw on anybody. Every responsibly armed citizen must make that decision for Him or Her self. I used drawing Your weapon as an example of Moving Memory to Muscle.
I am speaking for My Self and My Self Only: If I make the decision to draw My weapon, I have all ready made the decision to use that weapon... In the future if I miss-speak go ahead and correct Me, but do not twist My words. If You are unclear on what I said, just ask and I will make My self clear. As I am now. With that said I hope this subject never rears it's ugly head again. I yield the floor Mike/EZ

If you don't want your words misconstrued then do a better job writing your posts tough guy.

On the outside of the house I think it is not that easy to go for hidden cams, but inside the house they definately will be. The thing is that I don't want the cams inside the house being active during "normal" life and I'm looking for a way to swtich them on easily when needed. Some sort of emergency switch. One of the options I have in mind is indeed one sacrificial NVR and a VMS. But VMS looks more difficult to hide to me and I assume these will consume more power as well as a NVR. So in case when they cut the power I will need a more powerfull UPS that lasts long enough. I am also looking in some sort of emergency secure wipe of the harddrives in case they take the house upside down to find a recording device. To me that looks more easily to accomplish with a VMS. Unortunately I don't have enough uplink bandwidth to record from multiple cameras somewhere in the cloud or to a remote NVR when needed.
