Anyone else running a 10T WD Purple drive who can confirm, it is normal for the drive to be heard?
I am guess I am used to my SSD's on my main PC.

Older NAS running 2TB red drives is 100% quiet despite running surveillance for a long time. New NAS/QNAP with with drive, I can hear when I stand in front of it.

I guess the question is, if Purple drives are just naturally noisy?
Thanks.

I put a 10TB Purple in my Optiplex 7040 which is presently 2-feet away from my face; I can't hear it @FoxCR.

Edit: Sorry...mine is a 12TB Purple.

Q how do you like you optiplex. Is it only dedicated surveillance PC?
I have send WD an e-mail to see what they say. In the end the drive is supposed to have 3 yrs warranty.

I love my Optiplex 7040. Small as a toaster. 500GB SSD and a 12TB video drive. It's quiet and runs fast. I use it for my BI server and my personal home PC. A+++ IMO

That's a negative, to the "naked ear" should be comparable to any non-A/V-rated HDD's, such as WD Black, Blue, Green. If it's a faint roar, slight grind or squeal, could be bearing failure, accelerated by loss of hermetic seal, or poor alignment.....may have been subjected to rough handling.

In any event, I'd file that warranty claim ASAP.

My 8 TB purple which is recorded to continuously makes a fairly soft noise in quick bursts every 2 seconds or so coinciding with disk activity. It has never struck me as anything out of the ordinary for a hard drive. Louder clicking noises or high pitched whining can be signs of failure. I'd suggest looking for youtube videos of normal vs failing hard drive noises. Surely there would be several such videos out there (with varying levels of quality).

I don't know about purple drives specifically but the different sizes could be built with different parts which would make one model naturally quieter than another.
