US blacklists Chinese surveillance companies over human rights abuses

I'm a little confused about this.
I'm a long time supporter of Hikvision & Dahua cameras, and I thought this website was too as I come here quite often to read all the helpful info.
But with this quote from the ipvm website...

"IPVM led the way in exposing Dahua and Hikvision's participation"

& reading through many other pages of their website, it seems like IPVM have a strong agenda to the downfall of Hikvision and Dahua,
yet they have ties to IPCamtalk?
Sorry can anyone clarify if this is a pro Hikvision & Dahua camera website or not?

IPVM has zero connection to IP Cam Talk.

What John @john-ipvm does is highlight backdoor issues or security breaches / holes in IP based cameras... This is not unique to Hikvision or Dahua, they do it for all manufacturers! It's just the later are the biggest players in the IP camera game so would get more coverage. What IPVM do only improves the security of these devices by forcing the manufacturers to try and secure these devices as best as the can (Remember the overall security of these devices is down to the end user! If they are not exposed to the internet you almost reduce any security flaws)

I'm glad the likes of IPVM expose weakness as this is only good for the products! As for ties to this site, from my understanding they are just regular forum members that I believe may offer a discount to membership to their site.

What do you mean exactly? What posts on their site make it seem like that. I am with cyberwolf_uk in as it seems like they do a service exposing vulnerabilities?
 
I understand the point of view of companies needing to show morality for use of their products, but you didn't see sanctions against Toyota when their vehicles were found to be widely used by ISIS.

The US government is using anything they can against China right now and to me at least it looks like IPVM is serving them up everything they want.

Now this may never happen but imagine if it goes does the Huawei track and laws go ahead that prevent Google and Apple from allowing Hikvision and Dahua to have apps in the Playstore and Appstore, what will happen to tens of thousands of clients remote logins?

I agree with you that 'use' should not be a basis for sanctions. However, the issue withDahua and Hikvision is that they have more than a billion dollars of direct contracts with the China government to supply, deploy and operate these systems. In your analogy, this would be like Toyota going to Syria and working directly with ISIS, which obviously Toyota did not.

IPVM criticizes manufacturers across the board, e.g. Milestone Has Problems,
Axis Brags About "Whiskey Tasting" With Independent Consultants,
Knightscope Adds Just 2 Total Customers In Past Year, Yet Raising Money at $300 Million Valuation
We have a 'strong agenda' to uncover issues across the board. Happy to clarify on IPVM or any of the issues behind Dahua and Hikvision being sanctioned for human rights abuses.

That is a much better analogy.

My initial post wasn't that IPVM shouldn't be doing what it's doing, but rather why people here would show you support.

There is no doubt the Chinese government is freaking crazy, the things they are doing are nuts and any media coverage to expose what they do is a good thing.
Not saying what IPVM did there wasn't the right thing to do, but the punishment of sanctions is going to effect me and many others who use cheap cameras from China.
The amount of good cheap cameras that don't originate from China is pretty limited, and any Chinese tech company could suddenly be government controlled.

Since a good portion of the cameras discussed on this website are Hikvision and Dahua (or rebadged Hikvision and Dahua), it just didn't seem like IPVM would be wanted around here after that.
If the users of this forum agreed with what you did with respect to that article, then they would all stop using / selling buying any products from those companies immediately.

I saw you even got a few thumbs up here for your comments, but I don't see how people can agree with everything you have done in regards to that article then continue to support those companies.

So what is everyone here going to do? Are you all going to keep using and selling Hikvision and Dahua based cameras and support the violation of human rights?
 
I guess Cisco will be next? What are all those camera's connected to in China? Cisco switches/routers :)
 
So the spin doctors could only come up with 'Human Rights abuse' for the blacklisting?
Clearly its an excuse to help promote Washington's highest strategic priority. The preservation of the current distribution of global power.
This new cold war against China assumes they can stop, or reverse, China's rise to power. It seems rather fanciful given the current quality of global leadership and the challenges they face.
Its admirable for any country to stand up for their values, but this blacklisting is just another volley in the new cold war, to call out a challenger to the international order.
Preserving or reforming the world order will require exceptional leadership, execution and co-operation of both Beijing and Washington. Looks like there will be dark days ahead for us all.
