The HookUp ranks the Empiretech T5842 (Dahua IPC-HDW5842T-ZE) as the best affordable camera if night time performance is the main concern

We should have provided the link sooner to the review that @Wildcat_1 did on this camera (his review is the bullet while The Hookup is the turret version)!

@wittaj you really should make a case study thread that incorporates the ideas and examples in your posts #5 and #6 along with your 'canned' responses you post about distances.

It would be something we could link to on threads that users need to see.
Here you go:

I also tried putting a link into a comment on an earlier video and was blocked. It wasn't to this site either. It seems to be a Youtube limitation and not something that The Hook Up is doing however.
Right in settings of channels.
It's based off a full world, not just a link.
So ipcamtalk.com could be the word.

Most youtube watchers are newbies, if they can get the real good cams that is lucky for them. Some vlog post bad thing as good, so will have lots of people wasting money and time on them.
Even our cams also meet complaint of some questions, easy for us, but not for them, so we try to do good support for any questions. ;)

We are working with @Wildcat_1 and dahua team to perfct this 4k camera's pic, when have latest new fw ,i will post it here.
Yes as Andy said, I've provided settings recommendations, code adjustments and will also build some full blown configs as these make a HECK of a difference to the overall PQ day & night. I know I say it all the time but dialing in is key. In tweaking this and pointing to some of the areas in code that can be changed in default etc to make for a better 'out of the box' experience for some users, my hope is that all will benefit. In some of the balanced adjustments I've shown Dahua dev (how to increase in certain areas, decrease in others and all of this while keeping noise at a minimum) it really makes the camera shine even more. Will keep all updated as I await the next beta to see if this has been put in place

I haven't forgotten about the no shoe challenge, as mentioned every time I go to do it snow has been on the ground so as soon as its off the forecast will look to reproduce. May also have another cam review coming in the hopefully not too distant future as well so stay tuned

Hi All,

Quite an interesting thread to read through and I hope people don't mind me posting here (new user) but I just wanted to get what people's view on a good all round camera is.

I've come from the YouTube video that this thread is about but had some concerns. I already know reolink is generally not regarded well and the c800 zoom doesn't come in a turret version which from my understanding so far is the best choice out of the three types of camera.

The original c800 non zoom was updated and reviews seem to suggest that it's no longer a good product.

I'm in the UK so vendors that supply here would be preferred. Budget is around £100 - £150 per camera but higher spends are available for stuff like ANPR and at least one Colour night vision. I feel like if I can get good observation from a colour one and identification from IR then that would be the sweat spot.

I.e IR picks out details in the face etc but colour can provide accurate description. Blue jeans black hoody.

I'm not planning on using an NVR as they can be limiting and instead currently looking at using either blue iris or Synology surveillance station.

Any points in the right direction would be much appreciated and if this needs moving to its own thread then I'd be happy to do so

Thanks

What you need to do is get the camera with the highest MP you can find....
Kidding aside see this thread for a start:

As @mattp noted, don't chase megapixels. I did a post on this as well HERE when I was asked about megapixels in relation to cams while I was reviewing 2 PTZ's. @prosumer definitely take a look at the reviews myself and others have posted here with real world examples of how these cams perform. Then clearly identify and note your target requirements and pay attention to the critical area of installation . As I mention all the time, a good quality system starts with install location and ensuring that you're covering the area(s) with enough cameras to tackle the target and capture requirements properly, don't limit yourself to a 1 camera covers everything approach. Make sure you are installing at the right height, with minimal obstructions of FOV that you can (review the wiki notes) and then critically, spend time dialing in the camera(s) for the location and targets. Reach out via DM if you need any further assistance, happy to help.

I stumbled upon this post from the hook ups review. I was interested in the empire tec based on his review but after reading the comments I'm not so sure. I was interested in a decent priced poe for indoor and outdoor my home so there's no visible cable and I'll run everything through attic. 4k isn't make or break but under $300 a cam is what I'm looking to spend. Anyone have recommendation thanks.

Did you see my post #6?

In that post I demonstrated that the empiretech cameras are even more capable that the Hookup shows.

The distance you want to cover is more important than the MP and that was the other point of my post was that the Hookup was not using the correct camera for the distance he was testing.

Here is a thread I put together that shows the value of focal length over MP, along with recommendations of camera choices based on the distance you want to IDENTIFY.

After reading through this thread I gather two things. All youtubers are considered a joke and we shouldn't watch the hook up. Other than IPCT forums (Video Tutorials are all outdated), are there any video resources that will help us set up the system the "correct" way? I'm just curious Only because I've set up 6 systems in the last 2 years from the hook up's videos and all are working as expected. I get his videos are limited, but so are a lot of people's surveillance needs. From what I learned most people just want SOMETHING, and when I tell them "how about 24/7 recording for up to a month or more with remote access and zero recurring fees?", the answer is usually a sound YES. I always declare I'm not a "Pro" and that they'll get exactly what I am offering. Is there something other than the hook up we should check out?
HI @ipcamtalking

Youtubers .. many are in the business of getting ads .. this may limit the quality of their videos and influence the type of videos they produce, often this means less truth and more hype, more emotional messaging and less rational.

There are some youtubers who are horrible on advice, and others who are good .. normally to tell the difference you need to know about the topic enough to be able to make a judgement.

TheHookUp is getting better, and I appreciate that. Many of his early videos on security cameras were Reolink love fests .. which gave inaccurate assessments and thus were very misleading.

At first they looked good to me, then once I started to look closer I saw numerous errors and omissions.

To be fair, I see that in other videos also .. few youtubers cover 100% of the job you need to do for any task well enough - often you have to find various quality presenters to get a solid view.

With Reolink that is far harder, as Reolink has done a lot of social promotion so it is hard to find quality videos giving accurate assessments of Reolink and similar cheap camera solutions.
