It's been a little while since I last posted. Short story is that I've been wanting to set up my camera system for a while but was taking my time to figure everything out since I thought it would be a fun project for someone who's decently tech savvy. Well needless to say lots of other projects got in the way so as time went on I had bought alot of the equipment but I had to to shelf the project until now. We live out in what I would call a rural subdivision in eastern Canada, it's not fully in the country but everyone is on maybe 3-5 acres of land so it feels rural. Most folks are wonderful salt of the earth people but we live on a cul-de-sac and there's one set of redneck neighbors that happen to live right at the entrance who are making life for everyone in there an absolute PITA. They have rogue dogs running all over the place (one is a GSD) and they will run right out in the road after you if you are walking or worse if you're walking your dog. They also have step kids living in campers in the driveway, idiots doing donuts and burnouts with ATVs and POS cars around circle. Open septic field running right into the culvert......it's some pretty reckless stuff going on over there. It's getting to a point where we can't even put our dog outside to go to the bathroom without stray dogs showing up. Being nice and talking to them isn't working, they just give you the finger as soon as you appear to be out of sight. Gave them a free wireless dog fence in case money was an issue, nope they just DGAF about anyone else. So the obvious problem is that we may need to move this to the next level (we can't live pinned down in our own house) but again folks like this are totally unpredictable and can come unhinged at any point. So I really need to be able to document what's going on in the street and on our property so there's a record and not just hearsay. Hopefully this makes sense as to why I'd really like to have someone that knows exactly what they are doing to work with me to get my Blue Iris system up and running ASAP.

Here's what I have so far:
(8) IPC-T5442T-ZE
- (had 4 cameras, just bought 4 more today) I have CAT6 run to 6 locations on the house and busy mounting cameras, running Cat6 into my granny suite soon too
(1) IPC-HFW5241E-Z12E - for license plate reading
(2) Reolink 5MP PoE doorbell cameras

(1) Lenovo M720s Thinkcentre i7-8700
, 16GB Ram, 3TB HD, Win 11 Pro (this will be the NVR for the BI system)
(2) EdgeSwitch PoE Switch ES-8-150W (one for each side of the house to shorten the CAT6 runs)
(1) EdgeSwitch 16-150W PoE Switch ES-16-150W (this is my main switch for my home network)

I was planning to get a dual NIC card and run both the ES-8's into the back of the Lenovo and basically use that to isolate the cameras that way. I have nothing but the cameras and doorbells routed through those switches so they are dedicated just for security only. I was thinking with the right person we could work together using Teamviewer to remotely setup the system but again certainly open to suggestions.

Any help is most appreciated.

This is awesome! So do I need a separate person to handle the networking setup on the Edgeswitches or is this something that the BI tech support can also handle at the same time they are setting up all the cameras? I assume they can also help me with the VPN and getting push notifications on my phone setup correctly.

Some of that may be the other service:

Do you know if there is someone in charge of these (email, text, etc) that I could talk or chat with to find out? It would be nice to know that beforehand so I can get it up and running as fast as possible. Happy to tweak things with hardware or software later but I definitely need at least the basic system running quickly. Thanks again for your help.

Here's a schematic of what I'm looking to do, would folks be able to suggest if this looks like the best way to set this up give the equipment that I have now? I just want to make sure I have all the hardware I need installed before I bring in the consultant remotely to install everything. Looks like they are booking a few days out so this gives me time to order any hardware I might need.

My ER4 router will likely get upgraded to an OPNsense machine soon as well but for now that's what it looks like. Thanks again for everyone's help.

Do you have a 3rd ethernet connection on the lenovo?
Your wiring schematic should have 1 camera switch plugged into the other camera switch, then only the 1 camera switch plugged into the 2nd NIC on the lenovo

My plan was to add a dual NIC card or two single NIC cards to the Lenovo so that I can use the NIC ports for the 2 switches then use the on board ethernet port to route traffic back to the internet. Not sure if this is the best way to do it or not, but definitely open to suggestions.

Looks like you can get a card with 2 ports.
Use Whatever works better in your situation with your wiring and component location.

The only part I can't really change is to bring all the cams to a single switch. Our house has an attached granny suite and the roof lines aren't really connected so that basically makes it a necessity to have the two separate switches to accomodate all the cameras. Other than that I can pretty well change things around as needed.

Anyone know if a 1GB dual NIC card would work or should I be looking at 2.5GB or 10GB NIC cards for a setup like this?

This is great, thanks for the recommendation Tony. Got the NIC card and 4 more 5442 cameras on order. Should have everything by this Monday. Just working on running the Cat6 to all the locations I need for mounting the cameras (the doorbells seem to be the least fun).

Quick question for my setup. Should I be upgrading my hard drive in the Lenovo? It currently has just a regular 3TB drive for data storage and the OS is on an SSD for fast booting. The max cameras I could have with those switches would be 14 so given that scenario let me know what you guys would suggest.

Ideally, yes. Surveillance-rated HDD's like the WD Purple and Seagate SkyHawk series are purpose-built for video surveillance which entails lots of writing to disk and not so much reading.

I recommend a fresh install of Windows using the MS Media Creation Tool on a flash drive; put Windows, Blue Iris and BI's "db" folder on the SSD and as stated, video clips on the spinner.

That's exactly how I set up the machine software-wise so sounds like I'm all set there.

Do you recommend a certain size spinner HD (ie how many TB would I need) given there might be 14 or so cameras recording to it? Also is either brand better than the other?

IPCT has a Hard Drive Space Calculator here.

Uh oh...a Ford/Chevy/Dodge debate here. I've been a WD fan and user for a long time, others feel just as positive about Seagate, others Hitachi and IBM.

When it comes to replacing OEM hard drives in PC's, I've seen a few bad ones in ALL camps, not one brand seems to be more undependable or short-lived than the other. I've probably replaced over a hundred OEM HDD's between 2007 and 2017, mostly with WD Black and WD Blue. To date I am not aware of any failures but some of the owners have left this spinning orb.

When it comes to SSD's the last 5 years I have installed about 15 Samsung 860 and 870 EVO's, 2 Lexar NS-100's and 2 Silicon Power A55's. My fav is the Samsung.
