1st post, link to something strange on a sales thread?

Maybe I’m being overly cautious

My apologies if it’s legit but I won’t click it.

It's a legit link to this Amcrest camera.

@Paiberfunk - Amcrest is made by Dahua (same company that makes Andy's cameras), but Amcrest is a consumer line and as such most of their cameras use cheaper materials and sensors to keep the costs down, whereas Andy's cameras are true OEM, so you will usually not see an Amcrest equivalent on Andy's product line.

For example, this camera uses much smaller sensors than the 180 camera Any sells. Smaller sensor means it won't work as well at night.

Yea I know from having been reading the forums for a while but just lurking that Andy sells better stuff, I just bought my first camera from him off Amazon in fact after getting sick of the issues with the reolinks I’ve been having !

@Heavyopp sorry for the suspicious looking link it’s just the shortened URL that Amazon gives you when you copy the link from their app. Generally, as long as I’m using an up-to-date browser, ad blocker and other security measures I don’t worry too much about links as browsers are pretty heavily sandboxed these days.. but I guess zero days are still a thing. If you’re really paranoid you can always look up the DNS and see that it’s an Amazon owned domain for redirects /shortening.

What I was looking for here specifically was whether or not this camera is something that has a similar style that’s offered by Andy or anybody else selling cameras because I don’t see anybody else but Amcrest selling it and I’m wondering if it’s just really new or if it’s not actually a Dahua camera at all. From what I have heard, they occasionally sell other brands.

Andy sells this version, but does not have IR:

If you are interested in other 180s, look at this thread: Will Dahua/Hikvision etc. make a 180 degree camera with IR?
yes, this is the one I ordered from Andy. The Amcrest version does not have IR either… it would appear to be similar to the T180s but with a lower frame rate of 15 fps (and probably worse sensor , I’m guessing )

Yes the Amcrest is on a much smaller 1/2.7" sensor and a 2.1mm lens compared to Andy's larger 1/1.8" sensor and 3.6mm focal length.

Amcrest also sells the “Andy” specs camera for like 499. What made me curious about this one was its clearly a different build and form factor entirely vs the T180 or B180 he sells .. I’m looking to know if it’s a different OEM completely

Based on the model number sequence, terminology of features, and it's web interface on the screenshots in the manual for the camera, it is Dahua:

Because people were buying the cheaper cams and flashing Dahua firmware on them, so in recent years Dahua has made consumer sellers with different cameras and/or Amcrest spec'd the camera to be a lower price model.

Ah , but Andy seems to unique exception to this , getting OEM quality without getting gouged ?

If you pay for OEM you get OEM. The consumer brands need to provide generally lessor quality to keep price down and be able to provide a 1-800 number for customer service, which most true OEM doesn't provide.

Would people here agree though that Andy’s firmware and hardware often appears actually be better than OEM?

Yes. You will find that the firmware we get from him is actually better and more recent than what is on the Dahua website because many members here provide feedback to Andy and then Dahua makes modifications to the firmware and sends back to him and then he sends out to his customers. These have been great improvements that Dahua doesn't even update their firmware and add to their website. So many of us are running a newer firmware than those that purchase Dahua cameras through professional installers. Smart IR on the 5442 series is one such improvement. Autotracking on the 49225 and 49425 PTZ is another. We got the next version of AI SMD 3.0 prior to anyone else as well.

Look at the threads here where members are actually testing firmware and improving it for Dahua - find a Dahua dealer with that type of relationship that Andy has with Dahua - I don't think you will find it. Look at the Dahua 4k camera on the 1/1.2" sensor as an example - Dahua provides cameras to Andy to sell before Dahua even made it available and look at all the improvements being made to the firmware from input from customers right here on this site. And the kicker is, we are not Dahua's target market - it is the professional installers...

My guess (as a product manager) is that this type of relationship benefits everyone. Andy gets a niche market carve out with loyal customers, and Dahua gets avid beta testers by selling a small portion of products below market rates, and we get shiny toys. Everyone wins.
