4k 8MP vs 12MP ?

Hello guys. i m new on the boat! please go easy on me.

i m looking to install 16 to 24 cam at a school location. after some reading from google/reddit i got here to ask more questions. Annke is having a Flash Deals. and i m trying to pick using C800 (4k8MP) or C1200 (4k12MP). is it worth going to 12mp ? some reddit posted there isn't a huge diff and i should look at image senor

The C800 (4K/8MP) specs show that it has a 1/2.4" sensor which is more suitable for a 3MP camera with 1/3 of that resolution. It's low light performance, especially with motion, will be dismal. The 12MP would be even worse.

A 8MP camera should have sensor no smaller than 1/1.2" as shown below.

In general, those sensor sizes per those resolutions are considered rather small for low light image capture.

If you're really wanting to get these, Best to buy one of each to compare under real world testing for your setup for the next time they have a sale.

Otherwise, I prefer larger sensors.

We have a number of threads on this topic, and Andy has a sale going on for Dahua OEM models many of which you can find with larger sensors.

In general the 4MP 1/1.8" models are well liked for low light performance.

Note, there's a lot more to picking cameras besides resolution and FOV .. you need to have ideas of the placement locations you are considering and what you functionally want to accomplish.

Best place to start is picking up one varifocal Dahua OEM or HIkvision OEM camera 4MP 1/1.8" sensor IP PoE camera and a small PoE switch good length of cat5e cable with 23 24 awg copper wires, and setup a test rig.

It takes time to learn more of the basics before you should just jump into buying a full kit unless you are willing to spend more money by buying your first kit which would be your learning experience.

We are not looking into replacing any outdoor cameras ATM, Ring is doing the job very well. we have about 10 classroom and 3 to 4 hallways. the current camera running it's AV cable (non poe) we don't have anything valuable. maybe just some old comeputer and projectors. don't think low lights will be a need ? we want to focus more during business hours which all the office lights are on. and thx for bringing up about network and hosting equipment. Can i just use a cheap PoE switch with vlan setup. what CPU do i need ? do i need a video card for AI ?

please share more ideas

Since you are talking about cams that cost $49 I don't think you will find a managed POE switch with 24 channels that will be "cheap".

If you are serious about only wanting to see during the day when all of the lights are on, just about any cheap cam will do. Those $49 Annke would probably be fine. But I caution you that they will suck in low/no light. So if there is some kind of issue when the lights are off that the management was expecting the cams to provide identification, that will not happen.

The cams that others are talking about are very good cams but you will pay for it. They are not $49 cams.

What is your plan for monitoring the cams and storage of the video?
