Given what you've already done, first thing I'd do is get him to visit www.grc.com and run ShieldsUp to scan his ports and see what is open to the Internet on his IP. This will tell you if the forwards you've set are actually working or not first off.

This was what I wanted to ascertain, whether or not external gadgetry or SW was necessary. I've seen the FTP options in the on board Hik SW but I wasn't and still am not sure if cams without SD cards require a storage or staging area as it were, such as an on board SD card or local LAN storage...
