I've just purchased this camera (IPC-HDW5231R-Z) and set it up temporarily on my LAN (using 12V power brick). I'm using an SD card just for testing and have formatted it using the tool in the browser window and selected local storage as the desintation. A schedule is set (pretty much the default) What do I need to do to get start recording to the SD card? Live view is fine (have also used some privacy masking) but when I go to playback I cannot see any dav or jpg recordings.

You need to format the card in the camera GUI before you can record. That is all I can remember off the top of my head.

I am still having some problems getting IVS to function correctly on the IPC-HDW5231R-Z using 2.460.0000.7.R firmware and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

It appears that the camera itself can configure IVS rules but is missing all IVS record options. Smart Codec is OFF and IVS is ON. In the camera's web setup, I can successfully select and configure IVS rules, but am unable to setup IVS based recording. Under, Storage-->Schedule, the only schedule options available for record and snapshot are General, Motion and Alarm, but no orange IVS option. The same is true in Smart PSS under device config. The only way I can get IVS triggered recording is through Smart PSS under PC-NVR --> Record Plan where I am able to select the orange IVS option. No snapshots are taken despite being selected in the IVS rule.

Is this the correct way for this to function? I had thought this camera had complete onboard IVS triggering and recording functionality. Thanks for the input.

On the camera, the Alarm have both Alarm and IVS combined into it so you will need to select Alarm.

First of all I would like to say big thank you  to the users on this forum, been a great help to me over the last few months in deciding on what route to take with Dahua NVR and cameras. Hopefully lots more thoughts and findings to follow but initially I have noticed an issue on some 5231r-z units I own in that the black foam surround which seals the lens to the front glass was at least 3-4mm from touching, I noticed this due to the light leaking from behind the glass presumably coming from the internal board or IR lights. This problem can create an almost fog like appearance at night, certainly results in reduced contrast. I took the unit apart and moved the foam ring so that it sealed properly against the glass, hopefully this will stay in place when the focus adjusts, shall take down the one which is in active use and see whether the adjustment helps the image at night. This was flagged up when I noticed the night contrast looking a bit below average, also noted that I need to push the shutter speed to at least 1/250 potentially 1/500 to freeze motion, on previous analogue cameras you could get away with 1/100 to 1/250 shutter speed, out of the box the 5231 will not freeze motion very well at all but in my experience this has always been the case with CCTV cameras regardless of cost. Images show before and after the foam ring was moved, in the before you can clearly see the white paint on the inside of the camera body :wow:

@CamCrazy I hope that the new 2017 model with the redesigned lens improves this seal and the resulting light-leak issue. Thanks for reporting this, when we get units to test, it will be something to keep in mind. Can't wait to test this new model.

Thanks,

Robert

That would be good, always hopeful of better night performance as well, have been spoilt in the past with high quality analogue box cameras which were incredible at night but obviously lacking in detail compared to IP during the day. I will try and get my hands on the new 2017 model as soon as possible to test also.

@CamCrazy do the analog cameras perform better than IP cams in low-light now?

Thanks,

Robert

Robert,

I have experience with some high end Samsung analogue box cameras which are quite a few years old now and use Computar lenses, they are incredible in low light and total darkness, so sensitive to IR that they need just a small amount to make the image look in many ways better than daylight, I have even had to add filters to the IR lamps on occasion to reduce bleaching/over exposure. At the time I got a very good deal on the batch I purchased, sadly the equivalent in 2MP IP box camera is well over £250 without a lens, probably need to budget £350+ for the camera and lens and you still need a housing + basic IR lamp, essentially each camera once complete could be £450. I would like to stick with Dahua for the IVS function, my initial findings are that this works very well when linked with the Dahua PTZ cameras, early days yet and I might try a Samsung box camera, I notice also there is a Dahua IPC-HF5231E box camera, need to investigate lenses for this.

Bill, Thanks for the help. Your reply sent me in the right direction and I have finally got the camera on board IVS working...

For anyone else who may have trouble finding the appropriate IVS recording settings on this camera, here is what finally worked for me. The IVS triggered recordings are recorded by selecting the yellow "Motion" under scheduled recordings. Motion Detection under Video Detection Event can then be disabled and only IVS triggered events with be recorded.

Interesting, that was your experience, because when I captured this image of the default settings, Motion Detection was not enabled in Setup > Event > Video Detection > Motion Detection

Hey guys, I had one of these cameras arrive today. I have a dusk to dawn sodium vapor light on the peak of our garage at about 17 feet high. I plan to mount the Dahua on a lower eave, about feet high to the side (8 feet) and forward of the dusk to dawn light by about 12 feet. Will the dusk to dawn light cause me any performance problems with the Dahua?
