This cam is pretty amazing in low light. Thanks @EMPIRETECANDY as I just received the one I ordered to play with it. I'm SUPER impressed. Here's a 4am shot compared to a 10am shot (overcast for both)

Here you can see the 4239 at 4am and 10am. And the 5231 at 4am. 5231 is in B&W using an pretty powerful external IR light. But I thought it might help to give some an idea of what real world difference it is between IR and Color at the same time. Difference being that the 4239 has really NO white light other than the one neighbors front porch light. There are NO white lights on at my house. Only IR. Pretty amazing. For a home setup I think these would make great overview cameras.

Andy, I just ordered the IPC-JFW4239T-ASE from your Amazon store. I was pretty torn between this and the IPC-HDW5231R-Z. Let's see if I regret it!!

@ all - thanks to everyone for participating on this forum. Tons of extremely useful info and recommendations. I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to join up...

I know the common guidance is away from bullets due to spiderwebs, but would this TrueColor have less issue with that because it lacks the IR? I'm guessing the dome will have the same UV issues of prior dome cameras?

Anyone can tell me how this model is likely to compare to Dahua IPC-HDBW4231F-AS or Dahua IPC-HDW4231EM-ASE ? Possible 6mm option to go with the overview 2MP?

I can't speak for UV issues as I've never experienced them myself. Bugs will still be seen occasionally in front of cameras without IR, but chances are far lower of a spider building its web in front of one without active IR LEDs. The true color model is basically the same as those except it trades IR compatibility for better low light performance. These are fairly large as fixed-lens bullet cameras go, so just be aware of that.

Correct, since many bugs (that spiders eat) are attracted to the IR bulbs, this camera won't have that problem. I've had mine up for several months w/o any webs getting in the way.

Comparing this camera to the other starlight models is a bit tricky. If you have streetlights or other ambient lighting 24/7, the 4239 is pretty amazing. You'll see color detail the others can't capture... nights w/ a full-moon look like daylight. But to capture that, the shutter is running pretty slow which causes a good amount of motion blur. So indeed, as i stated earlier, you'll be able to see that a person was wearing a yellow jacket and blue jeans at 2am. If they were moving, ID'ing their face might be kind of tricky, but if they hold still, you might get enough detail.

The other starlights with IR illumination can actually give you a sharper image at night, but only with a B&W image (ir cut filter disengaged). So you might be able to capture a license plate or detailed facial image w/ an IR starlight at night while this 4239 camera could give you the color information. If you're considering the 4231, you should also probably look at the IPC-HDW2231R-ZS... it's like the HDW5231 but w/o all the smart features, which many people don't need.

Today I installed my first (I say that now that it is night) IPC-HFW4239T-ASE. Very impressed! Running it along side three other Dahua cameras, HDW5231R-ZE, HFW5231E-Z5E, and HFW4231E-SE. The low light ability is flat out amazing compared.

Will do and will buy a couple more for strategic locations. This camera is convincing me to improve my 12v exterior lighting around the property.

Edit: In fact, I just pushed the button to order another one.

Sorry just a pic of my monitor using my phone. Not supposed to be quality. Just a relative comparison of light gathering. Thought it was telling.

I guess I misunderstood, I thought the image top-row, third-from-left was probably the TrueColor picture and the image directly left was approximately of the same space (better pictures would definitely have helped). It looks like all of them are in night-time mode except the one to me, but better closeup images might really highlight the differences.
