Wouldnt really surprise me,
1- young people always want to be viewed as "cool", current, part of the latest trend, regardless of if they truly embrace it
2- young people now have become lazy deadbeats with regards to courting the opposite sex (and most everything else). When looking for sex/companionship involves sitting in your jammies and swiping right or left, well you're a fucking loser that cant get laid so you'll embrace any "movement" that increases your odds
3- each generation seems to need to try and out do the previous one with regards to how decadent they can be. I call it the 'Look at me" syndrome
