One organization I worked for required everybody in every job description to work the customer support telephone line occasionally. As an engineer in the early days of PCs, it was emotional hell. For fixing "my computer doesn't work", it got down to: Is it plugged in? Did you turn it on? Is the monitor plugged in?, and on and on with the list of stupid things. I do these stupid things, too. Still do, but having to walk other people through them was torture.I've always said that newbie engineers should always be made to work as a mechanic their first year out of school. And the asshole engineers who designed the crap should be forced to do repairs on their shitty designs for at least a couple of years.
I recall a story I heard over the radio. Customer support person was talking about time a lady called in to complain that her new computer would not turn on. She tried everything apparently including the "foot pedal". Yes, the lady thought the corded mouse was a foot pedal and she had placed it on the floor and was pushing the buttons with her foot. One organization I worked for required everybody in every job description to work the customer support telephone line occasionally. So in my Tech days had a call from a lady that said her modem was not turning on/working. I noticed the sound of cars in the background, I asked her if she was calling from a payphone, she said yes she was across the street, when I asked her why she said their building did not have any power...Wow
So how did he get that jack under the tire? He had to jack the car up first, haha
