    Problems With New HFW5241E-Z12E

Something out of the ordinary, it's a Bosch 8000 Starlight box camera with a 50mm UltraHD-caliber lens. I have it looking out an interior window with a dark curtain behind it to prevent reflections. Naturally I shopped real hard on Ebay and did not pay the prices shown below! The little...

In my city, my neighborhood is referred to as Felony Flats. It's slowly improving, but there's still drug houses and people driven to desperate measures. I posted some initial dark-scene videos from another one of this model in this thread: IPC-T2385G-I Hikvision 8MP fixed turret (night...

IPC-T2385G-I Hikvision 8MP fixed turret (night videos added)

@venturis also brought up an important point I had not tested with my first Hik, how does it do in a dark scene with IR? This next one goes on the unlighted side of the building where it'll need to run IR, so I did a quick spot-check out my window. This is the target scene, although the camera...

Co-worker: so did you do anything fun last night? Me: YEAH! :) I imported a camera from China, plugged it in, and put it in my shower! Co-worker: … :wtf: Me: I mean, in order to verify that it's waterproof. Naturally. I mean, what do YOU do at home? Mr. Hik appears to be OK in rain...

On the subject of audio, check your laws to make sure it's not technically illegal to record conversations without consent. In my country and state (United States, state of Washgington) it's not allowed, which could be a technicality that results in evidence being inadmissible in court. You...

The 8000i is made in Portugal by what I guess you'd call "the real Bosch", like my 8000 Starlights and 8000 Ultra. I have some of their Chinese-made models too, which I'm also fond of, like my 6000 Starlights. @EMPIRETECANDY apparently has a time machine, because I paid for my two additional...

I was going to say "he's probably looking for something to use as a belt," but he actually does have a belt. Capture from a 2.8mm Hik 8MP IPC-T2385G-I at 1/200th second, 60 max Gain, HLC at 50 to counteract the overexposure effect of the floodlights.

Bosch 8000i Starlight 8MP would be a nice alternative :) A serious camera, but high up-front cost at $1200. I'll give one of my incoming Hiks a water-intrusion test in the shower and verify whether direct water exposure could get anywhere that affects it, and let you know either of them have...

Stuff suddenly got real, the 2231 test cam picked up this interesting guy with a pistol, a machette, and a bandana mask. I should have had him stand still so I could dial in my settings... *sigh*

Above, here is your first Dahua 2231 sample from The Dark Side. This is forced color. Other settings are default. The takeaway here is probably just that forced color is a bad idea with this little light. :) Above is your second sample, same settings except the camera's in B/W mode using...

    Dahua camera combo advice

FYI here is a sample video from last night from a 5231 (equal night performance to a 2231). It's at 7ms shutter, about 1/140th second, in a decently-lit parking lot, plus the cam has SmartIR enabled. It's zoomed out to maximum 13.5mm zoom (its actual job is to watch the park in the distance)...

Tonight I'll tack my 2231 up and shoot you a real-world video in the scene shown below, if fog doesn't return and foil my plan. This is where my 2.8mm Hik is slated to go. My gut reaction is, light or no light, the Hik Darkfighter will be quite competitive with the 2MP Dahua Starlights. With...

    Dahua camera combo advice

If you have a little time to wait, I have another 2.8mm and 4mm Hik 8MP Darkfighter on the way from Andy, and I have a spare 2231 which is the same chip/performance as a 5231. I can slap them up on the south side of our building where it's much darker, and run you some direct side-by-side tests...

    Dahua camera combo advice

I'd take the 5231 off your list. Its own less-expensive sibling, the 2231, stole its thunder by costing 1/4 less for the same video performance, and you now have the improved successor to the 2231 in your list above, the -S2 release. I think at the time, the 5231 was a leading performer for...

    Hello - LPR sanity check

If either profile (Day or Night) is set so the camera can opt between color or black & white depending on the scene, then your current IR setting would allow it to turn on the IR in ZoomPrio mode when it's running black & white due to lighting conditions. If the camera switches from B/W to...

    Hello - LPR sanity check

The camera is also known for goofing up your focus setting when it flips from day profile to night. With the LPR tuning, the scene is too dark for the camera to auto-focus at night. The guys in the LPR forum have a couple of strategies. One is to leave the LPR cam in black & white mode 24/7...

    Hello - LPR sanity check

muwahaha!!! Karma! :D I snipped out the approximate plate size, they're around 70 pixels wide at your current zoom. For LPR work, gun for plate sizes to come out at 100-150 pixels wide, to give your LPR a better chance on the tricky characters like D versus 0 versus O versus Q. At least...

    Dahua camera combo advice

Samples from my Dahua x231 and Hik 8MP attached, from the day of the swap-out. I did aim the floodlight fixture up a bit between these two, but it's the same amount of light overall. These are both what I'd call "ID-tuned" settings, aimed at a fast shutter plus any other tuning that that gets...

IPC-T2385G-I Hikvision 8MP fixed turret (night videos added)

I see what you mean. I can draw one line, but the dropdown doesn't let me add another. I don't have a Hik NVR (I'm using BlueIris) so as a test, I disabled BlueIris's motion detector and enabled the camera's Smart Event instead, and set it to do a FTP upload and also alert Blue Iris from the...

For the front and back, also consider the Hikvision 8MP low-light model I wrote up here: IPC-T2385G-I Hikvision 8MP fixed turret (night videos added) In my system, it replaced the sister model of the 5231 (namely the 2231, same sensor and performance spec) and outperforms it in my situation...

8MP IPC-T2385G-I (OEM HK Darkfighter) vs Dahua 4MP IPC-HDW5442TM-AS Wondering why the IPC-HDW5442TM-AS isn't any better but worse than the IPC-T2385G

Could you get away with mounting an IR emitter outside above your patio? Something about the size of the one in this photo. It's pretty potent, and seriously overbuilt. It won't help with color, but it could boost the B/W performance of one of your other cams. Or if you had a different...

    Bad settings ?

Another tactic for reducing blur would be to move the camera to a location where a moving person is walking toward the camera as much as practical, rather than across its field of view. Since your cam is varifocal, that could be worth considering.

IPC-T2385G-I Hikvision 8MP fixed turret (night videos added)

Above, one more night video. This interesting guy showed up in a van with no license plates, carrying a 3/4-empty bottle of whiskey, and seemed to be trying to find a non-existent apartment. He returned a little later for another try. I happened to be awake and watching, so I called the crime...

    Bad settings ?

I have the same camera and I'm having similar adventures trying to find an optimal combination of settings. At the moment I'm trying it set to Shutter Priority mode in Exposure, with 0ms - 7ms shutter range, and noise reduction just a couple points past the bare minimum (set to 10 in my case)...

    IR Illuminators in 2019

Also, when the camera is looking down the beam of a light source, infrared or otherwise, stuff tends to look flat. Facial contours and details will stand out in contrast if the illumination is coming from an offset angle. If your objective isn't to light up reflective stuff (like license...

    Hello - LPR sanity check

I have a slightly older variant of your camera and found a good start in this thread: IPC-HFW5231E-Z12 LPR from 137 feet The older version of the camera has an iris that can be manually adjusted via software if desired, so roll with the punches on that one. I ended up using it for something...

    Hello - LPR sanity check

As you probably saw already, night LPR photos tend to be very dark. An overview camera that gets vehicle body descriptions at maybe 1/100th to 1/250th-second shutter speed, would make a good companion if you don't have something already planned for that role. Details like body damage, hubcaps...
