Why? Mine are blank on gateway (actually all my cameras are set with blank gateways and fixed ip addresses so cannot get access to internet, also I use a Ubiquity router with these blocked as well, but the logs tell me they no longer connect since setup that way and they work fine.

Would think it has to be logically separate. Only benefit physically separate would be is if someone was going to physically attach the system, like connecting it to the mains I guess. logically separate should stop external access and dialling home.why do they dial home anyway?

So I assume (famous last words ...) if you left it on 'Default' and selected it on the main screen, it would turn on for all cameras?

The only place I can find Hardware Acceleration is on the main 'Blue Iris Options' page under 'Cameras', and I can see anything at the camera level.
