All the recommendations I've seen say that for best results, get an i5 or i7 CPU with QuickSync. I have a surplus i3-3220 @3.30GHz with Quicksync. Would it be worth trying to use this for 8-10 cameras in Blue Iris?

Turns out the PC i got has WiFi, so I'm just gonna connect it to the LAN over that and use the built-in NIC for the camera network. That should keep it super simple and I don't even have to find a second ethernet card! It's a Dell Vostro 470 with i7-3770 @3.40GHz and 8GB RAM

Do the Dahua Starlight turrets not have a problem with spiderwebs? I have some cheap-o hosafe turrets and I'm constantly dealing with spiderwebs. I assumed that only a dome camera would be any better, but the Starlights look awesome, and if they could solve my spiderweb issue - even better.

But if the NVR is on its own VLAN, how do I access it from my default VLAN for management or monitoring? Wouldn't I need a router that understands VLANs? This is a pretty simple residential-type network with a typical Comcast cable modem/wifi router

My concerns are with allowing other devices on the LAN to have network access to the cameras directly. When the cameras are connected to the switch in the NVR, they are isolated from the rest of the LAN and can only be accessed by first logging into the NVR.

I completely agree with you, but securing inbound access from the internet is a completely different matter and one that is fairly well understood by security conscious users. I'm talking about unauthorized network access over existing physical LAN connections attached to accessible IP cameras...

Your router most likely performs this function by blocking the MAC or IP of the device. Plugging in a device with a different MAC or IP would easily bypass this restriction, not to mention that blocking internet access doesn't prevent the rogue device from accessing anything on your local network.

Neither the Ring Pro nor Doorbird seem great - they don't support ONVIF or POE and the ring Pro has some pretty scathing reviews on Amazon. Sounds like the jury is still out on the performance of the Dahua, but the specs indicate that it does support POE you can find it unbranded on Aliexpress...
