Does this now make the 4mp cameras worth considering over the 5231R-Z?

    Hikvision and Dahua Blacklisting

Very interesting. It’s seems to me, if you get past the human rights issue and want to go with one of those companies, then as long as you’re using a dual NIC setup you’re probably A-OK.

    Hikvision and Dahua Blacklisting

What I saw was they need a “license” to work with US companies. Again a bit opaque.

    Hikvision and Dahua Blacklisting

Do you guys predict any impact to us after the latest White House move to blacklist Hangzhou Hikvision and Zhejiang Dahua, Alibaba-backed AI titans SenseTime and Megvii, and other Chinese firms? It seems to be focused around US businesses but feels like the trade war may start to have more...

Is the IPC-HDW5231R-ZE getting long in the teeth?

I’m going to try to get one 5231R-ZE for now to test out where the cameras are going etc. hopefully by the time I’m done with that exercise the new cameras and firmware come out.

Is the IPC-HDW5231R-ZE getting long in the teeth?

I saw the new 4mp threads but I was under the impression people still didn’t like them as much as these.

Is the IPC-HDW5231R-ZE getting long in the teeth?

Hello I may have misread this but I saw on one of the thread someone mentioned that the IPC-HDW5231R-ZE cameras are getting a little bit old. Is this true? Or did I misread? If it is true would you hold out before building a new system or be happy with the existing cameras? I’m not in a rush to...

    Please critique my camera placement/selection

Actually Andy helped me select the cameras but he didn’t actually have context at the time about my layout etc which is why I posted it with my survey, locations of the cameras, etc Not noted on there is my existing doorbell camera which is a Nest. Frankly I quite like its package detection...

Recognition, License Plate Reading aka AI

I’ll live with it. One bullet in the back of the driveway isn’t the worst thing on earth. That’s basically what I have in this layout: Please critique my camera placement/selection

Recognition, License Plate Reading aka AI

Interesting. I’m not in love with bullet cams from an aesthetics point of view but I believe the dahua cameras that do LPR are bullets. I’d much rather have a eyeball cam but such is life.

Ah so it’s Partially a hardware thing. Makes sense now. What about facial recognition?

    Please critique my camera placement/selection

Hello I was looking for some help with camera types (turret vs bullet) around my house. Below is a survey of our home. I was leaning towards 6-8 cameras outdoors. Here's what I was thinking: Corner of the garage near the backyard facing the driveway (IPC-HFW5231E-Z12E? although I don't...

Recognition, License Plate Reading aka AI

Hello I'm really confused by this point. Is it the camera or the software or a combination thereof that give you the "AI" capabilities such as Identification, Recognition, License Plate Reading? I thought this was mostly a camera configuration and software thing not something built into a...

Pulling Wire for Newbies without Damaging Walls

Yeah that’s the price range I’ve heard. I’ll probably have them just mount the things while they are up there. I have a guy who I really like but he uses digital watchdog. Haven’t seen much about them around here.

Pulling Wire for Newbies without Damaging Walls

Hello It seems there is a wiki or sticky for everything around these parts but I can't find one on this particular topic. Is there a guide on how to pull wire without causing damage to a finished home? Thanks

How I choose a PoE from the list?

Yep appreciate you pointing that out. I’m just wondering if there is a good reason to pay up for an eight camera setup.

How I choose a PoE from the list?

While tempting, I'd rather stick to something I can get under $100 unless you guys believe there is a good reason to pay more for one. For 8 cameras in my first system I just feel like I'd rather not over spend.

How I choose a PoE from the list?

Hello I saw the sticky post. Pretty cool that someone would spend the time to do that. Great job! However I'm not clear on how to use it to actually select a PoE. I'm trying to put together an 8x4mp camera setup. I believe gigabit uplink is a good choice for 8+ cameras if I'm not mistaken...

    VPN setup questions

Hello While I work in tech, I'm a developer and rarely work with the network setup. I know enough about VPNs because of my job (and yes I've read the primer as well). Unfortunately I have an old school Verizon Modem/Router that cannot be easily replaced. So... I have some questions. First my...
