    IPC-HDW5242T-ZE-MF

All, Was browsing the Dahua website and came across the IPC-HDW5242T-ZE-MF. See IPC-HDW5242T-ZE-MF The specs look like the new 1/1.8" sensor but varifocal and 2mp. Could this be the ultimate night time camera? IPC-HDW5242T-ZE-MF 2MP IR Vari-focal Eyeball WizMind Network Camera...

Review - OEM IPC-B5442E-ZE 4MP AI Varifocal Bullet Camera With Starlight+

Thank you so much for your hard work - although it doesn't make the decision necessarily easier as the answer, as always, is "it depends" :). One thing I was thinking while reading through all of it was - what if you set the stream resolution to 1920x1080, so 2MP. Would you take advantage of...

    Review-OEM 4mp AI Cam IPC-T5442TM-AS Starlight+

(I've been lurking so far because I'm in the market for some more cams. Haven't been paying attention for about a year and was wondering if there's a good 5231 replacement) With 8mbit h265 the compression artefacts are mostly gone and I'm actually pretty impressed with this cam. This, combined...

    4.7.2 - March 14, 2018

So I'm not 100% sure about this, but I've been looking at MPC (Media Player Classic) source code, and from what I gather the Intel driver doesn't actually support H265 decoding directly although the CPU does support it. Decoding through DirectX does support H265 - but BlueIris doesn't support...

    Renamed Cameras

Doesn't work - if you rename the short camera name, you actually have to rename the files (and then regenerate DB). I went through this just last week :).

    Renamed Cameras

In a Windows command prompt, you can do ren camera_a* camera_b* in each of your folders where BI stores data (if you renamed the short camera name from camera_a to camera_b). You might need to rebuild the database after that (right click on the clip overview on the right if I recall correctly).

    IPC-HFW5231E-Z12 LPR from 137 feet

Same here, except that it even starts out-of-focus. Manually focus, leave it for a while, come back and it's out of focus. But only when zoomed in quite a bit.

    Severe Focus Issue with IPC-HFW5231E-Z12

Agreed. @EMPIRETECANDY, if you happen to talk to a Dahua rep, maybe you could ask for an option to disable autofocus as a quick fix for all the focus issues? If nobody asks it definitely won't happen ;)

    Severe Focus Issue with IPC-HFW5231E-Z12

I just got one that has focus issues, too. Autofocus doesn't actually focus properly when zoomed in more than 80%. Halfway zoomed in no issue. Manual adjusting still gives a clear image. Haven't had it running long enough to see if it loses focus. New firmware (201711) seemed to make it a little...

    IPC-HFW5231E-Z12 LPR from 137 feet

Similar issue here, bench testing one I just got (Z12E), outside during bright daylight. Focus seems to work fine, except when zoomed in 80% or more the autofocus consistently fails to properly focus. Adapting the focus manually a few clicks gets a supersharp image, but changing the zoom...

    IPC-HFW5231E-Z12 LPR from 137 feet

Looks good! I've got an ambitious project, but I think it can be done... to get the angle to the road as narrow as possible, I'm looking at about 225ft distance. All the way zoomed in, that's still almost 100ppf, so in theory that should be enough. See attached screenshot from IPVM calculator...

Test Run Video Through Motion Detector

That's good information, I'm sure that it'll come in handy for me at some point. Thanks for sharing.

Nice clear license plate capture setup! What do you think the distance is from the Z12 to the plate? How is the lighting situation? Any external IR? How much environmental light is there?

Test Run Video Through Motion Detector

Yeah I've used it a few times... I've used it just by replaying continuous recorded footage. Not saying it wouldn't work otherwise, it's just what I've been doing.

    Dahua IPC-HDW5231RP-ZE 800m Cable needed?

I would always run outside cable in a conduit - personally I love the flexible liquid tight ones (from e.g., Home Depot). At that point the cable matters a little less, but don't skimp on this. For PoE I'd always recommend full copper. Good experience with this one (but I haven't tried many, and...

Test Run Video Through Motion Detector

I think in "test run" you always see rectangles, regardless of the camera setting. You'll see blue rectangles if any motion is detected and they turn red if the motion would trigger an alert. So if you'd set minimum motion duration to 10s, a blue rectangle would turn red in 10s (also depending...

    Dahua 5mp Starlight Dome Issues?

The Dahua IPC-HFW5231 series have the option "auto iris" in the web interface. Not sure if they have an actual iris or if it's some electronic trickery (which would explain the bad image quality issues), but that setting in combination with fixed shutter speed messed things up for me. Setting a...

    Dahua 5mp Starlight Dome Issues?

Not sure if this is only for the varifocals or also for fixed, but I've seen similar issues when setting shutter speed to a fixed value (instead of a range) and keeping auto-iris on. If your shutter speed is e.g., 1/60 in broad daylight and auto-iris is on, it makes the iris super small to not...

Cleaning up street footage at night

I think the settings can be tweaked a lot, too. Probably increasing minimum shutter speed, increasing bitrate, increasing gain a little, probably decreasing noise reduction. You'll get way less of a ghosting/trailing effect and the footage will be much more useful.

    Compensating for narrow IR lighting

Triggered by your post I'm actually looking into it myself how I would do it. Best for me is putting it on the garage, which is unfinished inside, so easy to just drill a hole, put a 12v cable through, caulk around it and plug it in somewhere inside. Thanks for starting this, it'll probably...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Turret (IPC-HDW5231R-Z)

Here's a shot of the IPC-HDW5231R-Z (above) ikvision DS-2CD2385FWD-I 8MP (below) ointed at the same lawn from different sides. Hikvision has a 4mm lens, Dahua is probably zoomed in a little more. Very little ambient light, so mostly lit up by the IR of both cameras (each shot has the other...

    Compensating for narrow IR lighting

Nice! I might pick up a couple of those myself... I'm in a rural area so not much environmental lighting and my driveway alone is 10,000sqft - turns out to by quite challenging to have good coverage for even the areas that I care about.

    4.6.9 - January 31, 2018 H.265 hardware decoding added

Given my setup I would _love_ working H265 hardware support. I'm available for debugging and beta testing (in case Ken reads this - just PM me).

    Compensating for narrow IR lighting

If you don't feel like running a 12V line to the illuminator, you can split off power from the camera. If you power the camera directly, use a CCTV splitter on the 12V line (just a little 1-to-2 cable, can be found on Amazon for a few $). If you use PoE, you can always split off 12V power (with...

Best network security practices for new Dahua setup

If you want to make sure there's no funny stuff going on with cameras you don't necessarily trust (which for me personally is all of them), you ideally would like them to not be able to access the internet or be accessed from the internet at all. In my setup, the cameras are physically on a...
