Buy her a gun, cameras are great for seeing what happened but a 38 calibre does more to stop it happening.

Need help with finding best affordable NVR and camera package

Steve, for $600 all you will get is junk cameras and seems you have prior experience with those. As you are a network technician you probably have a computer or two laying around and a few switches. Buy yourself a Blue Iris licence for $60, add a POE switch and with a bit of learning you will...

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Blue Iris is the gold standard in security camera monitoring software BUT it is not for the faint of heart. If your looking for a new hobby and can put in hundreds of hours learning it, there is nothing comparable for the price. If you want your system setup in a day get a NVR. I think IDENTIFY...

Ubiquity EdgeRouter X - Configuring to Isolate Surveillance Networks

Not as yet, been so busy recently and cameras haven't arrived yet, but I look longingly at my new ER-X every weekend sitting on my desk. I think I'll have a few questions when I get started, took me hours just to figure out how to login to the thing. LoL. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Getting ready to buy first cameras and would like your opinion on best choices.

Definitely have the IPC-T5442TM-AS shortlisted to use once I workout the focal lengths required. The 1:1/8" seems well worth the extra $50. I have a lot of critters where I live so am a bit wary of using the bullets. The IPC-B5442E-ZE sure does look a nice choice thought, but $320 is probably...

Must of been a brainfart, I thought bullets were only wall mounted. Darn, now you just made my decision so much harder.☹️

That's interesting Peter looks quite good night vision. Are these a varifocal?, I'm looking for a varifocal as my first camera to experiment with to confirm what focal lens to get.

Getting ready to buy first cameras and would like your opinion on best choices.

Thanks sebastiantombs, I read the thread on the IPC-T5442TM-AS which is same price or slightly cheaper than the IPC-HDW5231R-ZE so leaning that way. I think I need to stick with the turrets as they will all be under the eves.

Thanks catcamstar, so an advantage of using BI would be that I can use lower featured cameras to do what the higher ones can do natively.

Getting ready to buy first cameras and would like your opinion on best choices.

So, I have purchased a BI machine, ubiquity router and 8 POE switch. Looking to start with 4 cameras to cover the external of my house. Been reading reviews and posts on the forum on the best cameras but need help on what will be best value for money. Looking at getting a varifocal 2MB...

Ubiquity EdgeRouter X - Configuring to Isolate Surveillance Networks

Guykuo, just want to thank you for your effort to make the er-x accessible for us noobs. I have been struggling with how to do opvn and was concerned about the very large learning curve to use this router but I now feel that using your config I should now be able to at least get up and running...

Hi th, I am a bit intrigued by pfsense and what it can do. Can you tell be what hardware you use for pfsense? I'm a real noob with this networking stuff.

What is everyone using for VPN service provider?

Yeah, I had a look at the Raspberry pi and in Australia they start at $150, a secondhand Asus about the same $150 or the TP-Link SafeStream at $75. What would be the best long term option?

What is everyone using for VPN service provider?

I'm in the same boat, looking at setting up an IP camera system and would like remote access to the cameras. I have purchased a Dell optiplex and a second NIC but trying to find a cost effective way of running OpenVPN. My router does not support VPN and will be costly to buy an Asus just to run...

    POE Switch

Nice, thanks looney. Total of 123w which is double most of the others switches. Just off the top of your head, would 15w per port be fine for the 2mp Starlight cameras if all 8 ports were used?

    POE Switch

I'm looking for a decent 8 port switch and see this one recommended a few times. I am a bit concerned it only has 60w of total power which is pretty lame for 8 ports isn't it? Any recommendations on a reasonably priced switch that will actually be able to handle 8 cameras.

What's a decent Poe door bell

Thanks CC, I will do a bit of research into this one. Not sure what's available in the market so it's good to get recommendations to narrow them down.

Just looking for a basic door bell and camera setup but a bit confused how the actual door bell chime integrates with the rest of the camera system?
