For example if viewing over a low-bandwidth communication link you might want to be able to use a resolution lower than the highest to avoid the consequences of network congestion.
And if the viewing device did not have a high-definition screen you might want a resolution tailored for that type of use.
And for recording or viewing on a large screen you might want the highest resolution.

You pick the resolution you want. Typically (on Hik's), channel 1 is high def while channel 2 is lower quality to stream on your phone....Some phone's cannot handle the high quality stream, some apps can't, bandwidth may be limited, etc.
