5231 vs. 5442 turrets

Hello all,

So I’m looking to get the last 2 cameras I need for right now. I have one of the 5442 3.6mm turrets now and so far I like it though I do have issues with the IVS not working properly and noticed that the turret can still be moved even when tightened down, other seem to be having this same issue. I’m debating on whether I should keep it or not because of these issue.

So that leads me to my next question. Would I be better off going with the 5231s? I’d probably get them as VF models for flexibility. Thoughts?

I think it really comes down to what your wanting to monitor. Honestly, I own both models and I prefer the 5442 because it has a really sharp picture. The 5231 is very nice as well a vf is a great option to have. It really depends on the situation.
5442 is great for a overview but the 5231 can zoomed in to exactly what you want to see. No lost pixels/unwanted views you don't want.
I guess it depends on what you want to use it for.

Thanks for the the reply. Yeah, I'm just a bit concerned since the turret can be turned when it's locked into place on the 5442, that seems like a security issue to me.

if someone can reach your camera it doesnt matter if its set in place or not, they can disable it with a piece of tape.

Yes, faces covered by something as they know the cam is watching ... .

They can just spray the camera as well. How do you protect the camera against that?
I see, on many cameras they say that is vandal proof, what they mean by that?
You take a bat at them, and the whole camera ends in the bushes. How vandal proof is that?

If they want to get inside your place, they will, with or without a camera system.

When the vandal proof camere ends up in the bushes after smashed by bat ... well it was not installed well, was it. The camere might survive the impact, but than there is a person who doesnt now the job and doesn not secure the camera in place ... will you blame the camera?

IMO, it really comes down to the specific needs of your site... but in general, I think its hard to go wrong with a 5231 turret. If you have the ability to get a 5231 and compare it against your 5442, I think that'd give you a first-hand experience that not a lot of folks have yet (although it seems like more and more 5231 owners are starting to get some 5442s).

I'm in the opposite situation. I have a bunch of 5231s that I'm happy with, but I'm thinking about swapping in a 5442 just to get some experience with them. The only thing that's been holding me back is going from a VF to fixed lens, .. many of my VF 5231s are zoomed in more than a 6mm fixed-lens 5442 can do, so I'm not sure if I want to give that up quite yet.

I'm also thinking of trying a 5442. It may replace a 3.6mm fixed focus camera that has a 1/3 inch sensor. To my surprise, the 6mm lens on the 5442 gives about the same field of view as 3.6mm with the 1/3 inch sensor. So using 3.6 or 2.8 on the 5442 gives a really wide FOV.

The fixed lens 5442's are a bit brighter than the VF model, and IMHO now surpass the 5231 series.

I have four 5231's and I had just ordered another 5231 to use on my office build out -- but then started to read the review(s) of the 5442. So I waited to unbox the 5231 and ordered one 5442 2.8mm. Wow. Easily as good or better low light than the 5231.

So I am sending the unopened 5231 back and today I ordered another 5442 2.8mm. I don't really use the VF on the 5231's much so the 5442 is a big step up. That's what I will be using in the future.

Leaving the 5442's full color, no IR. My 5231's can't really do that.

The 5442 outshines in color, the sensor size is solely the determinant here. Don't even need the IR, its so damn good
