Hi all,

I have a 7608 which has been working fine for around 12 months, recently I noticed within the app on my phone I could no longer remotely view the cameras. When I got home I powered up the monitor connected to my DVR and it was suck on the initial boot screen (very loud hissing as sound), I rebooted the device and it hangs at the boot screen showing the hik logo (again making the terrible noise).

I have popped open the box and removed the HDD and all cameras - rebooted same outcome, the mainboard has a red LED light on it and it beeps twice on boot - but will not get passed the logo screen. I have not attempted to change firmware etc (ever) - one day it was working the next DOA. Any help appreciated.

I assume some sort of corruption of the OS but I'm really not sure what to do ?

To figure out the cause, and possibly fix it, you will need to connect up to the serial console on the main board.
If the 7608NI-SE is like other Hikvision NVRs and cameras, you'll need a couple of items that are readily found on eBay etc.
A PL2303HX based Serial TTL to USB convertor, often sold 'for Arduino'.
A 4-pin 1.5mm JST ZH wired connector, often sold in packs of 10.
And when you have those, the very good PuTTY terminal program to see what's going on.
As it's beeping, it suggests the kernel is starting up, then presumably failing.
If you are unlucky it may be a hardware failure.

Thanks for the guidance - I decided that buying extra bits off eBay and trying to physically diagnose the problem would be about as hard as buying a new unit - so I ordered new one.....(turns out I clicked too soon - now I will have a spare NVR)

Problem solved - I thought I would share a solution in case this post comes up in google to assist others my solution to fixing a bricked Hik NVR (or stuck on splash / logo screen) is below.

I found this post:

http://www.cctvforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=53004&p=295963&hilit=tftp#p295963

Which details in pretty simple terms how to flash the firmware. I figured the symptoms my NVR was exhibiting were pretty similar to a "bricked" incompatible firmware NVR so I thought I may as well give my stuck NVR a new firmware.

Essentially user Sander:

And for the unbrick:
- Power off NVR and stop the ping action
- Downloaded firmware for my type from the international Hikvision site
- Downloaded Hikvision TFTP server from another source (google is your friend)
- Put the firmware file in the TFTP folder
- Run TFTP server (with the above network configuration !)
- Power on the NVR and the update starts.
-> A few moment later the NVR beeped 2 times and I shut down the server. The NVR rebooted into the user menu.

Well done for getting there. And for sharing.
Which one is the spare, the old or the new?
So did you buy a 7608NI-Ix model instead of the -SE model?
The I-series models are several levels above the old -SE models.
