advice from those running xprotect in a VM

No not really. it's comparing two different focuses of application. The xeon setup has it's strong points for datacenter applications where very heavy loads are key.
 
and yet all of those servers you have have been long since removed from all datacenters and thats why you can buy em for a dime a dozen.. they sucked to much power; most cloud hardware now days is dramatically more power efficent and when you have million dollar electrical bills every year the are happy to give em away to any sucker willing to pay for em.
 
Since I can't afford the latest and greatest I'm not really up to date on what is used in the datacenters now, so no challenge to what you're saying!

Having two machines covering 8 cameras each does seem quite overkill, but I like your point about more of a desktop unit that certainly wouldn't suck so much juice.
The end goal is to have one machine that can handle all 16 cams.
But to be fair, what are the advantages of running milestone on a server vs a desktop and vice versa ?

Obviously I haven't tested it yet but I'm fairly sure I could run 40 2mp cameras on my bi box without an issue, i7 6700. Ditch the servers.

I did remember hearing about that, but I thought that was only for paid essential customers right?
I found one shop that sells the essential license, looks like for 16 cams it would run about 800. but plus the price of the milestone care I wonder how close that would put me to the outright cost of 1600...

why in the world would you spend 1600 dollars for a vms in a home environment??

That makes absolutely ZERO sense. Modern pc's can handle constant loads just fine and they run cool. I have over 20 pc's running blue iris 24/7...no problems...you are wasting money running these old "servers" thinking they are more robust in some way..they are not, in fact, they are more likely to fail since they are so old.

Do I want to spend that much money on milestone? heck no.
But I am very comfortable with that software platform both at home and at work.
I've played around with many different nvr software packages but the ease of setup and monitoring with milestone seems the better option, just not the price.
As an alternative I tested out the iVMS from HK. Since all the cams are HK it found them fine, but a lot of the features I was trying to setup seemed quite flaky.
ispy and BI were next, but again I'm comparing to the milestone setup and these seemed to have far more in depth setup that I was looking for.
Maybe I'm being too hard on expectations, but I would certainly love to spend as little money as possible on this!

1600 is insane for a home environment (16 cameras is way over the top too)...look at blue iris...
ispy is not free and requires a perpetual monthly subscription for remote viewing and alerts...

Are you still looking to run this in a VM? Yes, it can be done. I have XProtect Essential running in a VM (Hyper-V on Server 2012 R2) with no issues. CPU usage is low (10%). Not sure why you would be running at 100%, but likely because you have 6 cameras running. I have only 4 2MP cameras right now.
